Beachfront hotels / resorts accessible from Barcelona?

Does anybody have higher end, beachfront hotel recommendations (preferably boutique hotels) that are easily accessible from Barcelona? I am thinking of visiting the area in July and interested in splitting my stay in the city and at the sea. I am ok to rent a car or fly but I only have one week total so I don’t want logistics to be too difficult. This is a graduation trip for my adult son so we want a nicer hotel (4.5-5 star) hotel but not necessarily super fancy / posh — excellent location, highly swimmable beach, well maintained rooms / furnishings, air conditioned, non smoking, and good service.

Thank you!

How about staying on the sea but in Barcelona in the Barceloneta neighborhood? I have stayed at Hotel Arts Bareclona three times. It is located in Barceloneta, is beach front and has all the features you listed. W Hotel, where I have not stayed but have visited, is another option for an "in the city and on the beach" trip.

Thank you! That is a definite option, I was looking at both of those hotels for my city end of the journey. How are the beaches at each of them? I was thinking of splitting my stay so we could just explore another area, maybe a little more off the beaten path, but this is a definite possibility and was my plan if I can’t find a second hotel elsewhere that I love.

Just so you know... July is the worst month as we have hordes of tourists flocking into Catalonia from all over the world, alongside many local residents on holiday (school is out!)... so expect all beaches to be packed, regardless of where you go.

I know, unfortunately our summer schedule is crazy tight so we have limited options with our schedule. But that’s also why I’m hoping to find a small, beachfront hotel outside the city for part of the trip.

Yes, of course, I thought so. I was just lowering "your expectations" in the sense that, even posh sites can be crowded.

Outside the city I'd check Sitges or Tossa de Mar, to name two towns not too far from Barcelona that have a special allure. Yet both are also crowded in summertime

Thank you! I will look for hotels in these areas! I know we can’t avoid the crowds but this is the last summer we have a kid at home so future travels will hopefully be at better times!

Hostal de la Gavina in S'Agaro is one of the classic hotels of Spain. Built, I believe, in the 1930s by a family.

I have not stayed there but my parents did. But you can imagine how long ago that stay was! But I'd look t it for sure; again it's. classic, kind of legendary, Spanish hotel. not glitzy but elegant.... Put it in the category of places like the Alfonso XIII in Sevilla, Grand Hotel La Toja in Galicia, the Maria Cristina in San Sebastián..that type of old world hotel but on the sea... I'm guessing they get a lot of repeat visitors in season...

One thing I would check for, in season, is if they have any weddings booked. There was a wedding at La Toja when I was there and I thought it was fun to peek in at the festivities, but if you think you might be bothered by that, ask them.....that would go for any upscale large hotel, I guess....

The other thing I'd keep in mind with these classic older hotels is that the rooms can vary a lot,, with a big jump in price comes sometimes a really huge jump in size, view, furnishings, et etc.

There's another hotel of of that ilk further up the coast outside Begur, but that's further from Barcelona.
HOTEL AIGUABLAVA, another grand older property with visitors repeating sometimes for generations. but that one is four star and Gavina is 5 star, if that means anything...

Enric mentioned Tossa de Mar which we stayed at last year. There is a stunning beachfront, Art Nouveau hotel in Tossa de Mar called the “Hotel Diana” which fits the bill.
Tossa de Mar has a beautiful crescent beach below its castle and the Hotel Diana sits right on that beach.
Tossa de Mar can be reached in 75 minutes by Express buses departing from BCN airport during summer.

Thank you, hotel Diana looks absolutely lovely. Have you stayed there or do you know anybody who does? Thank you again, I’m getting such great options and I appreciate everybody’s input.

While staying at the Hotel Capri, we saw the hotel from the boardwalk in Tossa de Mar and the architectural features looked so fascinating that we were drawn inside the Hotel Diana. We walked through its restaurant to the lobby and were welcomed inside to photograph the incredible public spaces there with stained glass, statuary, ironwork, extensive woodwork and other Art Nouveau architectural features. The hotel was designed by a Modernista architect commissioned to build the “Casa Sans” in 1906 by a wealthy cork magnate who lived in Barcelona and vacationed in Tossa de Mar. The architectureal features of the original building were preserved.
Next time in Tossa. will definitely stay at the Hotel Diana.
Cheers!
