Hello, We head to Bilbao, St. Jean de Luz and Hondarribia next week for a 10 day stay. I am looking for recommendations to visit wineries either with a guide or without. Thanks in advance!
These are two of the most well-respected companies for wine tours in the Basque regions of both countries:
As mentioned above, Tours by Basques. We did a wine tour with Mikel, and it was excellent!
Hi.
There are not so many options to enjoy wineries with quality red wine near Hondarribia or St Jean de Luz, this is an area for white wines (txacoli). In Hondarribia itself you can enjoy excellent Txacoli at Hirutza https://www.hiruzta.com/. They are also a restaurant. On the French side, not too far from Saint Jean de Luz you can enjoy la La Cave Irouleguy https://cave-irouleguy.com/fr/. Whites were good, reds a it too acid for my taste, but the vineyards simply amazing. If you are into red wines you should consider a day tour to Rioja wine country. Part of it is in the French Basque country. I´d recommend you visit Labastida and Laguardia. At Labastida you will find a magical place, Remelluri, but I believe they stopped offering tours. Maybe a save option to avoid driving is to book a tour with pick up in Hondarribia. Those tours are normally expensive, but they ease your planning. Good places to compare options in Rioja are winetourismspain https://winetourismspain.com/wine-tours/rioja-wine-tours/ and riojawinetours https://riojawinetour.com/. Another alternative is that you get on a bus or train to Haro, where at walking distance you will be able to find lots of different wineries that offer wine on the glass (muga, Lopez Heredia or Roda ) and where you can have lunch at Terete, a great local Asador. I hope this helps
