Basque Region - Bilbao Round Trip or Bordeaux/Bilbao

Hi -- Trying to build an Basque region itinerary and was originally planning on flying in and out of Bilbao. However, in looking at flights, Bordeaux pops up as a possibility, which leads me to think of building a one way itinerary. Just looking for thoughts as to whether this would be a good idea. (I'm also going to post this on the France Forum). Thanks!

I guess it depends on how you intend to get around. You wouldn’t want to rent a vehicle in France and drop it off in Spain, or vice versa, due to the substantial one way drop charge. However, it’s only about a three hours drive from the border back to Bordeaux.

Whether to rent a vehicle at all would depend on where you intend to visit and how well those places are served by public transportation.

We took the Basque tour in October and flew into Bordeaux where we spent 4 days. The city has a tram running from the old town along the river to the Cite du Vin and the market hall. The old town is very walkable. There is a direct train from Bordeaux to Bayonne where our tour started. I loved Bordeaux and would like to return someday.

We have friends who own a bakery in Bilbao, so pick up a delicious cookie at Kuki Cookie! Add to your itinerary!
Our next RS tour is Switzerland, but the Basque tour is on our must do list!

We did a tour last year of northern Spain and southern France including Bordeaux and the Basque Region.
It was great. You need a full day in San Sebastián or perhaps two days. Same with Bilbao. If you visit the wine region of Rioja, plan a day there.

In France, do visit Biarritz, it is very charming as in the small area of French Basque.

Farther east of this area in France is Carcassonne and I highly recommend visiting it.
