Base in Bilbao for 4 nights or choose a second locale

Hello fellow travelers:

We are heading to the Basque region after visiting friends in Barcelona in later September. We plan on training to Zaragoza, spending a night to see this town and then renting a car to head North. We will have 4-5 nights before we need to head back to Barcelona to fly home. We could stay in Bilbao and just do the day trips around the area or divide our time between two areas. We will be outdoors as much as possible, hiking and site seeing, will visit the Guggenheim and enjoy the food and wine. After reading some of the great trip reports and posts I wish we had more time! Would you pick a second locale like DSS or stick to one place and day trip it?

Thank you for your input

Bilbao makes a great place to stay. Beautiful old town, funicular train, Azkuna Zentroa, the unique Hanging bridge...and easy access everywhere (DSS is just one hour away).

If you have a car, I suggest stopping in La Rioja for a night.

San Vicente de la Sonsierra might be a good place to stop. Or Briones just across the river. Besides being able to visit a winery or the Vivanco Museum, there are some nice hiking trails through the vineyards. There are varying degrees of difficulty and distance.

You could also try Laguardia in La Rioja Alavesa, beautiful town also with some hiking trails, but that time of year is the grape harvest and it gets busy and touristy.
