Will be in Barcelona for one day prior to sailing. Staying in the Gothic quarter,Example. Any recommendations for top wine bar/restaurants for a single woman? Thanks!

Dunno about 'top' but Vinya del Senor in the Born district certainly is a great wine experience. Great wines, equally great food and much atmospheric added-value if one sits at an outdoors table. You'd then be 10 yards from the adjoined basilica. Occasionally wedding parties will spill out into the lively square, almost close enough to touch.

If buying vino might be of interest then the 'Vina Viliteca' shop located one minute deeper into one of the nearby the historic alleys will satisfy. Fantastic selection and very friendly service. Note that the shop also has its own deli located across the lane.
I am done. the end

I should point out that “the Born district” mentioned by our friend @gregglamarsh doesn’t actually exist, in case you search for it on any map.

The location mentioned above is in the neighbourhood of Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera, which in turn belongs to the district of Ciutat Vella. Despite the countless blogs by non-local self-styled ‘connoisseur travellers’ who boldly slap labels on places and areas without really knowing what they’re talking about, Barcelona is officially divided into 10 districts, further broken down into 73 neighbourhoods. Not a single one of them is called El Born. This is often a source of confusion for many searching for "El Born neighbourhood" or "El Born district".

I have to admit that the incompetence and laziness of some local bloggers also contribute to spreading this misconception, since, unfortunately, not everyone fact-checks the information they publish. Another regrettable example in the city is the so-called “Bunquers del Carmel,” where there were never any actual bunkers; what existed was an anti-aircraft battery with three cannons during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939).

I think Greg must have fallen into the trap of one of those misinformed sites.

So what exactly is this El Born that everyone talks about?

El Born is simply a short promenade or boulevard (passeig), barely 100 meters long and about 20 meters wide, connecting Santa Maria del Mar church with the Centre de Cultura i Memòria (museum). In the Middle Ages, the open space now known as Passeig del Born was one of Barcelona’s main stages for jousts and tournaments.

The word 'born' itself comes from the medieval Catalan term for a "lists field", the arena or enclosed ground where knights on horseback charged at each other with lances. These events weren’t just military training or aristocratic sport: they were also huge public spectacles, attracting nobles, merchants, and common folk alike. Festivals, markets, and religious celebrations were often intertwined, making the Born one of the city’s busiest gathering places.

Over time, as jousts disappeared, the promenade remained a vibrant commercial and social hub, retaining the name "Born" even though the tournaments themselves faded into history. In any case, the name refers only to the boulevard itself—Passeig del Born—not to the surrounding area, not to the adjacent streets, and certainly not to any neighbourhood or district.

And no, locals who know even a little about the city, when they say ‘El Born’ -without adding 'neighbourhood' or 'district'-, are referring only to the promenade itself, and if you push it, maybe the immediately adjacent streets, but nothing more.

A short (and personal) list of bars offering natural wines in Barcelona

By neighbourhood...

  • La Dreta de l'Eixample: Món Vínic, Contracorrent Bar
  • Esquerra de l'Eixample: Glug, Pepa Bar a Vins
  • Sant Antoni: Garage Bar
  • Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera: La Vinya del Senyor, L'Ànima del Ví, Bar Brutal
  • Poblenou: Masa Vins
  • Gràcia: Bar Selvatge, La Graciosa, El Pepino, Pimpla Vins

La Vinya del Senyor -suggested earlier by Greg-, Glug and Garage Bar will probably offer the greatest selection.
