I did the 8 hour tour at the time with these people who I think are still doing it.

It is a tour that leaves from Barcelona in which you leave Barcelona at 8:30 a.m. and return at 4 p.m.
And I can tell you that it's okay

I don’t have anything to add about tours but I can say that you are making a good choice to visit Montserrat. One of our family’s favorite things we did when we were in the Barcelona area. We did not have a tour. Getting to and from is easy.
