Barcelona to Madrid then to Sevilla, Lisbon Portugal

Hello, first post. So my family of four is going to fly from Lisbon Portugal to Barcelona (if you experienced folks recommend it) for a week cruise. Once we get back into Barcelona, id like to take the AVE train to Madrid stay a day or two then go south to Sevilla, see a flamenco show, stay a day or two and somehow get back to Lisbon/Caicas portugal. Here are my questions:

From what I've read, we can easily take a 2hour Ave train from Barcelona to Madrid.

Would a Spain rail pass be advisable from barcelona considering we need to get to Portugal over a 5-6 day period? How easy would it be to go from Sevilla to Portugal on train?

Should I fly back to Portugal?
What would be the best way to break it down? I personally don't like to plan up to the last minute of my travel. I like to go with the flow, explore and adventure. The renfe website is extremely complicated.

is there another website we can use to buy tickets, usa friendly. THank you so much for your advice Im starting to get very overwhelmed with the whole planning. :(

First, I would look seriously at flying into Lisbon and coming home from Madrid or Barcelona or even Seville. Probably cheaper and far more convenient. Called open jaw or multicity ticketing. The Spanish rail system is the least developed of all the European countries and the rail connection between Spain and Portugal is limited. Doubt if a train pass would save anything for the limited trains you are using. However, discounted advanced purchase tickets would be best.

Use the Germany rail site for European train schedules -- dbahn.de Cannot buy tickets there but the scheduling info is very good and easy to use. Trainline.eu is a reseller of tickets that is easy to use.

This article is an excellent guide to the Renfe site. Once you understand the site (just a little patience is all it takes if you read the article), it's very easy to use. Many US credit cards don't work but PayPal does. What time of year is your trip? (Madrid and Sevilla are devilishly hot in summer). How many nights do you have in Spain after the cruise? 2 nights in a city gives you one full day to sightsee, plus a few hours on the travel day in either the departure or the arrival town. Are you spending any time seeing Barcelona?
