Has anyone taken the night train from Barcelona to Madrid ? How many people in a sleeper compartment ? What was the price ? Any suggestions or helpful hints ? We'll be there in mid August .

You do realize the AVE fast train gets you to Madrid in 2 1/2 hrs. Check official site renfe.com, deep discount tickets go on sale 60-90 days. Seat61.com thoroughly explains how to purchase tickets.

No night train. Fast trains are have been in place for the past few years. In less than 3h you're in Madrid. There are several day trains. You certainly need to pre-book, especially if travelling in August.

Do not waste time trying to buy tickets with your credit card - just use PayPal, which works well.

And there is no need to purchase anything better than Turista class, for comfort's sake. The trains have comfortable seating, large tray tables, power at all seats, footrests, rather spacious toilets, and plenty of room to move around.
