The AVE fast train in nearly 3 hours one way. Not a likely daytrip.

It is impossible to do Madrid as a day trip. The fastest AVE takes 2h 30 min to get there. Why not explore Catalonia by train, not so far away from Barcelona? There are 2 super easy day trips to do by train from Barcelona: Girona or Tarragona. Have a look at rodalies.gencat.cat and www.renfe.com to see fares, timetables and lots of infos.
