Barcelona to Biarritz: Best Way to Get There?

We are spending a week traveling independently in Barcelona, and then need to get up to Bayonne to join Rick Steves' Basque Country tour. We will depart from Barcelona on Sun, 6/21/14 and need to be in Bayonne Sunday, 6/22/14 at 5 pm to join the tour.

No flights direct. Train takes 10 hrs, so we are looking at a Vueling flight from Barcelona to San Sebastian (1 hr, 10 min; 80 euro), and then taking a bus to either Biarritz (spending the night and sightseeing, then a bus to Bayonne the next morning) or a bus from San Sebastian to Bayonne. Is there a better strategy to get from Barcelona to Bayonne?

It seems like your idea of flying to San Sebastian and then taking a train or bus to either Bayonne or Biarritz is your best option!

Thanks, Sharon. We are also exploring renting a car, driving to Zaragoza, then Pamplona, and up to Bayonne. Our time frame won't allow for much exploring along the way, but it's a possibility we're considering.

We just spent 3 nights in Zaragoza--I know you won't have much time there but it's quite a nice city. Renting a car sounds like a good option too!

Edit: Are you thinking of spending the night in Zaragoza? Here's one more thought--parking could be tricky in Zaragoza. You could take the high-speed train (AVE) from Barcelona to Zaragoza (less than 2 hours); spend the night and pick up a rental car in Zaragoza. We used Hertz in Zaragoza to pick-up a car. Then, not sure about picking up a car in Spain and dropping off in France...

FYI, the cheapest train fare departing from Barcelona to the border station at Irun at 7:30 a.m. on 21 June at www.petrabax.com is currently $55 (advance discount rate).

Hi Susan,
What did you decide to do? Our party is going on your same tour and we are doing the same thing, traveling in Barcelona first. We are taking a Vueling flight to Bilbao on Saturday, then the bus to Biarritz, staying there sat night and then the bus to Bayonne Sunday to meet the group.

See you soon!
