Barcelona Subway

In a few weeks, I’m going to be spending 3 full days in Barcelona with my wife and 2 daughters. We don’t plan on using the subway for much more than to and from Barcelona Sants. I believe each rider needs their own transit card? Can you purchase multiple rides on a card without purchasing 10? Thanks for the help.

Just correcting one thing: the T-Familiar offers 8 journeys, not 10 :)

You'll notice there is a range of other cards, but in your particular case, this is the one more convenient for you.

Don't discount taking the metro more often while in the city... it's a great way to move about quickly and efficiently (and cheaply too). While indeed Barcelona can be considered "compact" compared to some other cities, don't you misjudge its size, nor think "everything is in one place"... because it's not :)

That's inflation for you. Last time I was in Barcelona, it was still 10 rides. And it was a good deal even for 8 rides.

No, the old T-10 (which now is called T-Casual or T-Usual, depending on the usage), continues to offer 10 journeys, but it is not multi-user now. The T-Familiar, which is multi-user, has always offered 8 journeys.

Well, I used it for two people (the dog didn't need a ticket).

Thanks everyone for the valuable information. Any thoughts on the Madrid Metro with a family of 4?

The subway in Barcelona doesn't service the main tourist areas around Las Ramblas. We never used it. We walk the city and took a tour to visit the sites not in the main tourist areas.

Actually we are walkers and stayed in Eixample and used the Metro. to get to Mont Juic, and some of the other places. You can walk but sometimes we were just tired and loved being able get around quickly.

You used to be able to use a 10card for multiple people but it sounds like that may have changed. We were scared about all the stories of pickpockets on the subway but it never happened. In part because we were uber vigente and never used backpacks or other bulky items. It's actually a wonderful system-though lots of stairs, and is probably only second to the Madrid Metro in ease of use.
