How do I book a reservation with a reliable taxi to pick me up around 8:45 Thursday morning at Roger de Flor and get me to the airport in about half an hour?
I’m guessing your flight leaves around 12:30 pm or 1 pm because you need to allow 2-3 hours once you arrive at BCN to reach your gate . I don’t have a specific taxi recommendation. However, Airport trains run from Passeig de Gràcia , a large underground train station, and can be .7 miles (7/10 mile) from Carrer de Roger de Flor. But that depends on where you’re located on the street since it’s a long street. “R2NORD” trains from Passeig de Gracia go to BCN Terminal 2 every 30 minutes and take 25 minutes. Tickets cost about €4.20. Free shuttle buses link Terminal 2 with Terminal 1. Allow an additional 10-20 minutes for the shuttle to T1. The R2Nord train may be the most reliable mode of transit because “Rush Hour” in Barcelona lasts until 9:30am and you don’t want to get caught in a traffic jam at 8:45am while trying to catch a flight. Once you arrive at BCN. you need to allow two hours for domestic/Schengen flights and three hours for international flights. Be sure to scope out Passeig de Gracia station before your Thursday departure because it ‘s a large transit center for trains and the metro and it can be confusing. The R2Nord Airport train also stops at Barcelona Sants train station and can be taken from there.
The only thing more complicated than the info above may be choosing which Modernista buildings to see while in Barcelona!
Carlos from Barcelona will probably be along soon to give you more info.
Hope you’re having a great time in Barcelona!
Wow! this is so helpful, Kinko! My flight is to Florence, Italy and scheduled to leave at 11am. Italy is in the Schengen but my passport is from the USA. Will that slow me down? It sounds like I should plan to arrive at the airport no later than 9am. In that case, I will need to leave Roger de Flor near Placa de Tetuan between 8 - 8:30?

Nope. Your passport will only be checked at security to make sure you are the person named on the boarding pass, just like in the US, except here, a drivers license works as a government issued ID. In Europe, your passport is the only acceptable form of government issued ID. Other than that, it is virtually the same as a US domestic flight.
If you are checking luggage and getting a boarding pass there, it will also be checked there as well, only because it is your legal ID. But if you were taking only carry-on and printed your boarding pass in advance, or had it on your phone app, you would not have to stop at the check-in desk.
The traffic was HORRENDOUS at 8:30 in the morning. I don't know how any stranger could navigate these streets in a rental car. The taxi drivers are aggressive but the drivers in this city are more respectful to traffic laws and to pedestrians than any other city I've every been in. I was charged 32 euro and the trip was about half an hour from Roger de Flor to the airport. The taxis can use the bus lanes - kind of like the commute lanes on US freeways - so it really speeds up the trip. I can't imagine a more congested time of day and yet the trip was still only half an hour. Once to the airport, it was pretty easy to navigate through to my gate. I had checked in ahead of time online then used a kiosk to get a hard copy boarding pass too so no long lines and the signs in the airport and the flight board were all clear. I had time to spare, but that is better than being panicked. They posted the gate 1 hour before the flight departure time, and then immediately started lining people up to board. Until the gate is posted, you are told the terminal (I think there are 3 or 4 terminals) and then you have to wait for the gate. I had to walk about 30 gates down the terminal once my gate was posted and I still made it in plenty of time.
