Barcelona - Private Tours

Hi all - my wife, 14 yo son and I are traveling to Barcelona in late March. We are interested in booking at least one private tour and would appreciate thoughts and recommendations.

  1. Gaudi sites. Are private guides permitted to provide tours inside Sagrada Família? Should we simply sign up for the tours provided by Sagrada Família docents and hire a guide for other sites? Lastly, do you have any recommendations for a guide who would take us through Parc Guell and the other major Gaudi sites (minus Sagrada Família)?

    1. Gothic Quarter. Is it worth hiring a guide for this neighborhood? Or is exploring alone ok? Thinking of exploring this area on our last day, before catching 4:00 PM train to Montpellier, FR.

FOREVER BARCELONA is very highly recommended for private tours in Barcelona. They are learned guides and have all kinds of options:

I would recommend barcelonaroutes.com, she is a local and licensed tourist guide very knowledgeable and friendly. Enjoy that amazing city!

We did something very similar with family and this worked well: For Sagrada Família, go with the official guided tour. Access for private guides is restricted, so it’s the easiest option. For the rest of the Gaudí sites, a private guide is worth it. We used World Experience for Park Güell and a few other spots, and it felt very easy and well organized.

Gothic Quarter is fine to explore on your own, especially if you’re short on time. A guide adds context, but it’s not essential.

Hello Chad,

Jose Soler with Pepito Tours is an excellent guide who does a variety of tours in and around Barceolona, including tours of various Gaudi sites such as the Sagrada Familia. Rick has recommended him for years and we have had great feedback from folks who have hired him as a guide. The Sagrada Familia also has a free app you can download onto your smartphone which, has an audio tour of the site.

While a private guide can give you insight about what you are seeing as well as answer questions and give personal recommendations, it isn't necessary. You can easily tour the Gothic Quarter on your own. Rick has a Barcelona City walking tour in his guidebook, which is also available as an audio tour in his free Rick Steves Audio Europe app, which you can download onto your smartphone.

Sorry to barge in without providing a direct answer to your question.

Guided tours vs DIY is always a bit of a debate… sometimes even a bit controversial. Some people love the warmth of having someone explain things, others prefer digging into info that you won’t always find in standard guides. I won’t get into that. It’s personal, and honestly, all options are fair. Everyone has their reasons.

What I will say, for Chad or anyone else on the fence, is that for discovering Barcelona, and pretty much any of its main sights, you really don’t need a guide (person).

First off, it’s one of the most visited cities in Europe, so lots of stuff is set up for DIY visitors. At sites, you’ve got free audio guides, info panels everywhere, clear signage… it’s all very easy to navigate on your own. And as for the city itself, there’s so much to see just by walking around that, with any decent travel guide in hand, you’ll cover pretty much everything you need.

The only reason I’m saying all this is to reassure future visitors that hiring someone to take you around and explain what you’re seeing is NOT essential when you visit Barcelona. There are more than enough resources out there to explore the city on your own and get a great experience.

And no offence to guides or tour companies… I’m not here trying to mess with anyone’s livelihood.

I have toured the Sagrada Familia using the tour on the official app and it was quite good. I also used the Rick Steves audio tour Rich mentioned above and found it more than adequate for exploring the Barri Gotic. No need to hire a private guide unless you really want one.
