If you want to visit any of the most popular sights in Barcelona, you'll need to buy online tickets in advance. Otherwise, you'll probably be standing in horrendous ticket lines. These are the problem sights:

La Sagrada Familia
Parc Guell
Casa Mila/La Pedrera
Casa Batllo
Picasso Museum

In addition, the English tours at the Palau de la Musica Catalana tend to sell out, so if that's on your list, I wouldn't wait till the day of the visit to buy a ticket.

I don't know how far in advance you need to buy tickets to the first five sights. They really pack in the visitors, so there are a lot of tickets available, but I last visited those places in 2016, and there seem to be more people traveling now. You'll need to think about the locations of the sights, the location of your hotel, when you may want to eat lunch, etc., because tickets to all those sights are timed. They're expensive enough that you won't want to have to leave one of them early in order to get to the next one.

On our first day in Barcelona (2019), we did this: to Sagrada Familia first thing in AM; walked to and toured Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau; lunch in the courtyard at Sant Pau; bus to Park Guell. It was a great day!
