Barcelona Picasso Museum

I only have 2.5 days in Barcelona next month, and I have never been there, staying at the NH Centro Hotel in the Old Town. I have heard mixed things about the Picasso Museum in Barcelona - that I should not miss it and that it is not as worthwhile as seeing his paintings in other great museums.

If I go, should I book a ticket online with an audio guide - I was thinking around 2:30 p.m., after lunch and after walking around the Old City. Is there a better time of day to be there due to crowds or weather! Thank you!

The museum focuses on his development at an artist, mostly on his very early works, from a 14-year-old student to the beginning of the blue period, and the cubist period. The mixed opinions stem from people's expectations and interests.

Was not impressed with the Picasso museum. The Miro on Montjuic however is amazing. Given only one I would go there.

I can give a whole explanation why, but in short I was really delighted about the Picasso Museum in Barcelona as it gives an overview how he developed as the artist we know now. Well this is art and everybody has it’s own feel and opinion and with that it’s own expectations, so hard to say if you will like it or not, you have to find out yourself. But to understand the artist I think this museum is not to miss and it is not that big you will risk “overload” after a while.

Hi Jai, as you can see above two answers, two different opinions. I concur with Will... art is very personal and there's no single one 'correct' answer. Same exact thing goes with many other sites... ie Sagrada Família, the most visited church in the world, doesn't necessarily have to "entice" you either. Thus, I can only reflect on the fact this museum is within the top 15 museums most visited in Catalonia and has over 1 million visitors each year.

Actually, there's no "better time", in June it's always crowded, yet perhaps first in the morning, there might be fewer visitors -but again, it's not a rule because it depends on many factors (school visits, tourists cruisers having just moored in the harbour, large organised groups visiting precisely at the same hour than you, etc.). What's important is to pre-book, as in many other attractions in Barcelona- or else risk having to stand in really epic queues!

I always enjoy a museum that is dedicated to one amazing artist. As long as you pre-book, the Picasso Museum is an easy one to visit. RS guidebook suggests some good places for lunch in the neighborhood.

I was not a Picasso fan before visiting this museum. I only went because my daughter recommended it and we were traveling with an artist. Seeing the progression of his talent and learning how and why he developed his talent gave me new appreciation of his art. The building provides an impressive backdrop for his works. We booked the very last time of day possible and appreciated the lighting at that time of day. I would think first thing in the morning would be a great time, too. Just pre book tickets, whatever time you decide to visit.

Wow! Thanks so much to all of you for sharing your experiences -- Chani, Ann, Christine, Patty, Wil, Enric. Your replies really give me the big picture and will help me decide what to do. :-)

Now, I'll add that I went to the Picasso on my second visit to Barcelona, which was 7 days. I skipped it on my first (4 day visit).

The point is that Barcelona has lots and lots of great places to see and things to do. Choose those that are of the most interest to you.

I went to the Picasso Museum in Barcelona about five years ago. It was part of a walking tour I took. It was sponsored by the TI in Placa Catalunya. It started in the late afternoon (16:00 I think) from the TI and was called Picasso's Barcelona. We walked for about 75 minutes and saw various places where Picasso lived, worked, and displayed his art. Then we went to the Museum (entry was included in the tour ticket cost) and our guide spent about an hour there with us giving us an overview of everything. Then he left and we were on our own to explore as we wished. I think this is a great way to see the Museum.

Just don't go and expect to see his really famous works :)

However, it's not a big museum so you can breeze through it in an hour, in case trying to hit up other stops on the same day.

Good luck!

2.5 days, great, Gaudi tour: Sagrada Familia, Parc Guell musts, Casa Milla and Casa Balto, 3/4 day. Picasso museum 1.5 hrs. It's in Gothic quarter, great restaurants, do in morning, have lunch, or do late afternoon and then have tapas, a must see in Barcelona.
