Barcelona Palau de la Música Catalana - best seats?

Hi, we would like to see a concert at Palau while in Barcelona and I see that Arte Flamenco is performing on August 23rd. There are seats available everywhere - I was thinking in the orchestra section or first level box seats; does anyone know what seats are best? I sat in box seats in Havana (in the gorgeous opera house) and really liked that experience and could see very well but the venue was configured that way.

Also, I think I read somewhere (in a very old post) that there is a cafe for tapas and cava before the performance; is that still true? I thought we could get there early and have a look around and a snack.

Hallo,

I can’t remember exactly what seats I bought, but I remember looking at the floor plan a lot. It is a magical experience. I know I was a bit higher up. In other words, I wouldnt worry about the seats. I highly recommend it.

We were there a few years ago for a tour and had the opportunity to sit in the orchestra section. We also got to see the incredible view from the upper level. I don't think you could go wrong with any seats you choose for a concert venue. This was one of the most exquisite concert halls we have ever seen.

I'm sure you'll have a good time. But I want to observe that just as there are "tourist concerts" in Salzburg and Prague, there are tourist dance concerts in places too. I hesitated to offer this lightly informed opinion, but I did look at one of their videos. I've seen a lot of Flamenco Festivals in New York City, with big name artists from Spain, so I do know a tiny bit. It was the fact that it's lightly sold that made me view the video.

You probably already know this, but there is more than one venue inside the Palau. Make sure you are in the main concert hall if you are attending a concert instead of taking a tour of the building. Yes, there is a bar in the lobby.

Sherrelle, buying tickets months in advance in 2016, I sat in the first row, dead center, on the mezzanine level, great seat for appreciating the concert hall, although still a little distant from the performers. And yes, there is a cafe that is great for a light meal, dessert or beverage, before a performance or at some other time during your time in Barcelona.

Thanks everyone for the seat suggestions and confirming the cafe/bar for a light snack.

Tim, does this mean that you do not recommend this particular flamenco group or that it seemed legit and okay?

Sidney, no I did not know that there are multiple venues in Palau. I will make sure to go to the right one!

Sherrelle, I am sorry if I appeared to overstate my specific knowledge. I used to work at the NYC theater that puts on that Flamenco Festival. Because the subject of "tourist concerts" (in cities with long European musical histories ... ) is a frequent topic on this board, and because I spent most of my career as a dance stage technician, I just wanted to get my observation on the record. There is nothing wrong with promoting performance arts at all levels. But once you get into "art", it is important to mention standards. And (although you certainly did not do so ... ) it becomes difficult to deny the right for someone to have an opinion!

I have never seen this company in person, which makes me unqualified to advise you not to go!

But I did think that the level of performance I saw in the video was not at the international touring level. In fairness, while on a small-ship cruise in Tahiti, we saw (on the ship, in a rather small room without a stage) a local cultural-heritage Polynesian dance group, with performers from 10 to 60. I mean to make a direct comparison with serious, devoted American groups like Irish Step Dancing. The proximity of the performance went a long way to make up for the non-professional character of the event.

We were able to get a into a (run by the facility) tour of the Palau. But in other cities, I have gone to performances just to get a view of a historic theater. I only wanted you to make your purchase with your "eyes open".

Arte Flamenco is in the concert hall at the Palace of Catalan Music on August 23rd. The cast members are shown on the website - a good sign that this isn't a down-market performance just for tourists.

We saw Opera y Flamenco there in October 2017. I am so glad that we decided to spring for the most expensive tickets. The interior is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen - pictures really don't do it justice. I regret that we didn't get there early enough to enjoy a drink in the bar. One reason that I decided to pay for better seats is that I bought cheap seats for the opera in Vienna, and really wish in hindsight that we had paid for a better view.

If you like Montaner, you would probably enjoy the Saint Pau Modernista complex, which is about a 10 minute walk from Sagrada Familia.

Thanks all! Tim, I understand your thoughts and agree :). This could be a quasi-tourist performance but I think it would be better than the flamenco dinner theater that I was going to book. Although that performance could be great, I'm sure that is only meant for tourists.

We saw a dance performance in Cuba and it was truly the highlight of our trip. This was an international dance troupe - in fact the pride of Havana - and one of the best (if not the best) dance performances that I have ever seen. But it was also nice being in the gorgeous theater with locals and doing something non-touristy. And a steal at about $30USD.

I will get orchestra seats. I always try to get the best seats so that my daughter can see well.

We saw a show there, opera y flamenco, last October and really enjoyed. We were seated center upper floor first row, perfect view of the show and amazing ceiling. We also went to Palau Dalmases for an unbelievable hour of traditional flamenco from Andalucia artists. I've seen half a dozen flamenco shows so far, from Sevilla to Cordoba to Madrid and Barcelona. This one was a great, emotional, traditional performance.

We loved our box seats near the front of the stage. We could look down and see the dancers up close. Beautiful theater and great experience!
