My husband and I are taking a Windstar cruise the week before we take a Rick Steve's tour of Italy (I know...indulgent :) and our last day of the cruise ends in Barcelona on Easter Sunday. We will be spending that night in a hotel in the city center. Has anyone experienced Easter Sunday in Barcelona and any ideas of what we should do/see? I'm going to assume many restaurants and sites might be closed, however I know there might be some great religious activities going on too. I'm open to any suggestion.
Easter week is one of the biggest festivities all over Spain as it´s a long vacation for us, so all bars and restaurants will be open and very busy and all attractions will be working full time, also on Easter Sunday. Nothing much going on in Barcelona from a religious point of view that day. Business as usual, just with much more people visiting the city.
Sorry to disappoint, no. We Catalans are not, in general, very religious and although you can see some "processions" (ie. in Girona or Tarragona), these are more out of tradition than religion. In Barcelona, no "major" religious activities occur during Easter. There are a few small activities scattered here and there.
Thank you. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be a situation where everything was closed and I needed to figure out where to eat or so crowded and busy that I need to just hide in my hotel :)
As a general rule, most festivities related to religious traditions in Spain (except Christmas day) will mean that everybody will be out in the city enjoying a vacation day and all bars and restaurants will be open, it´s normally big days for "aperitivo" and lunch outside.
