All neighbourhoods in Barcelona have at least one food market (or more): http://infocatalonia.eu/w/9IrIh and for detailed info and suggested routes: http://bit.ly/WlLPIv

Note however that, if you're looking for the 'romantic' aspect of the traditional markets, they are not street markets (like in Rue Cler) but indoor markets and some have sadly lost its allure as 'farmer markets' after being "modernised" -if you catch my drift. Yet in some, you can still find a few street stands around the market building (ie. Mercat de la Llibertat or Mercat de l'Abaceria Central both in Gràcia district). Btw, mercat = Catalan, the local language, for "market"

Lastly to mention two featured markets: Mercat de la Boqueria, in La Rambla, and Mercat de Santa Caterina, by the Cathedral in the Old City. The first one is the oldest of the city, dating back to 1217 -albeit was then a meat market only and was located somewhere else in the area and from 1470 onward in its present location. Unfortunately these days has become a bit of a 'theme park' oriented basically to tourists. It's indeed very worthwhile visiting but expect lots of visitors and don't expect the cozyness of the past. In fact, many local residents have ceased to buy here because of this. The second one is also the second oldest, dating back from the 15th century and largely rebuilt in 1848. It has been lastly remodeled in 2005 by Catalan architect Enric Miralles -same designer for the Scottish Parliament- and it features a multicoloured ceramic roof (with a ceiling made of warm, light wood) recalling the Modernista tradition of trencadís decoration.

Sharon,

I'm not sure if I'd categorize it as similar to Rue Cler or Campo di Fiori, but you might consider staying somewhere along La Rambla as it's a very vibrant area and also very convenient to transportation, restaurants, stores, etc. Depending on which hotel you choose, it should be an easy walk to either Plaça de Catalunya or the harbour area (which is beautiful). One hotel you might consider is http://www.nh-hoteles.es/hotel/nh-barcelona-centro (very comfortable rooms and the staff are great).

There are often lots of street entertainers along La Rambla (and of course a few scammers with the "shell game" or whatever) and the La Bouqueria market is well worth a visit (it's about half way down La Rambla on the way to the harbour). If you have any shopping to do, there's an El Corte Inglés department store right on Plaça de Catalunya. There's a Metro stop not far from there as I recall, and the Hop On / Hop Off buses also depart from that area.

If you're planning to visit the magnificent La Sagrada Familia, be sure to book a time well in advance.
