PSA: Barcelona nearly doubles tourist tax

“The city of Barcelona, Spain, has nearly doubled its hotel guest tax, from $5-$9 to $10-$17 per person, per night — while holiday rentals rose from 12.5 euros per night, up from $7.24 to a maximum of $14.49, Reuters reported.”

Additionally, “ The regional parliament of Catalonia said it is planning to ban all short-term rental accommodation by 2028.”

It isn’t enough to change plans, but will cost a little more to visit.

I’m sure this information is on a number of outlets if you wanted to read entire articles.

And whether to principally limit tourism or raise more revenue for the city, Barcelona has every right to increase a hotel guest tax or impose other taxes that target visitors to the city. American cities impose high taxes on tourists with hotel rooms and car rental, often to pay for designated projects or programs like sports stadiums.

As we have discussed on these forums whenever protesters start shooting water guns on people dining in restaurants or painting anti-tourist graffiti, those cities complaining about over-tourism have the power through taxes and other measures to reduce the number of visitors they receive.

Good info to tuck away (although I don’t foresee a return to Barcelona for myself, but you never know).
