I'm looking for an expert on traveling within Barcelona on public transport. On a recent trip, we were often baffled by the ticket machines. At one point we bought tickets that were then refused by the ticket-taking machines. Ok, so we were clueless, but we want to go back and know how to get around when we return!
Thanks in advance.
You need to spend some time here and do some advance homework - https://www.tmb.cat/en/home
From memory I think tickets have to be inserted up the 'right way'. That would be the only thing if you have a valid ticket. If I'm unsure whether my T10 ticket is exhausted, I will try it at the gate, to check if it still has credit.
I used the T10 card like djp_syd, and it worked like a charm.
Great info!
thank you all very much!

... to know the number of trips remaining in the card -or whether one's card is already finished- there's a much easier way... just look at the back of the card, http://www.goingplaces.sg/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/barcelona_t10_ticket.jpg the last digit of each line indicates how many journeys has the card left. In the example: one (1). When the card is empty it will show "TITOL ESGOTAT" instead, which is Catalan -the local language- for "finished" :)) Also, if you try to use an empty card at the bus, the machine will make a loud noise and a small red light will show. At the metro the turnstile simply won't open.
