Have any of you visited the Maritime Museum? Thoughts? I'm planning our first trip to Spain and am a little overwhelmed. Thanks in advance.
We very much enjoyed the Maritime Museum in Barcelona.
If you are going to Madrid, the Naval Museum, a short walk from the Prado is also well worth your time. The first ever map of the American continent, from 1500, was fascinating.
The replica of the Spanish galleon alone is worth the price of admission,
If it's what I think you're referring to, the ship in question is a full size replica of La Real, the flagship of the Holy League in the pivotal Battle of Lepanto against the Turks. Technically it's not a galleon but rather a galley, that used oars still. This was one of the last major battles which used oared ships in the Mediterranean.
As for the Maritime museum in Barcelona it really depends on how much time you have, I don't think it's in the top five places to see, they recently redid the museum and I found it confusingly laid out, I liked how I was before the renovations. However say you have at least four or five days then I think you could consider visiting. It also depends how interested you are in Maritime history.
Dang it!! I literally typed galley and then thought "oh, wait, that can't be right, a galley is the kitchen. It must be a galleon...
Lol no worries! Not only do we have galleons and galleys, but also the galleass, which was a combo of the two and a specialty of the Venetians
We always visit Maritime Museums because we have a connection to the sea, my husband was in the Jugoslavian Navy and was a merchant marine for many years.
And the museum in Barcelona was one of his favorites. So, if you have an interest in anything upon the water, this museum is worth a visit.
