Barcelona/Madrid recommended area for lodging

Our family of 3 (includes teen son) are spending 4 nights in Barcelona and 4 nights in Madrid in the month of March.
What areas/barrios should I look for lodging on each city? Looking for safety, convenience to sights/transportation, comfort, character (lodging and/or neighborhood) and a good night of sleep (not too noisy if possible).
Hotel or short term rental (suggestions if any).$ If STR, I usually use Airbnb in the USA, would that be the way to go, or is there a better site for Spain?
Budget $150-350 per night. Thanks in advance!

We enjoyed our stay at Mercure Madrid Centro. It's about a 5-10 minute walk from the Prado Museum, about 10 minutes from the Reina Sofia, and close to Retiro Park. We walked to many other places from here. We did take a taxi to the Royal Palace. The neighborhood is safe, and we were within walking distance to many restaurants.

The RS Spain book for Barcelona recommends the Hotel Denit and Hotel Midmost. They have rooms in your price range. My experience in Europe so far is to get a room that is at least one level up from the basic or standard room. There is also a company that has hotels in both Madrid and Barcelona and was recommended in another forum post. you have to join their "tripster" group, which doesn't cost but gets you a 10-15% discount. The Hotel in Barcelona is ICON BCN, and features king sized bed and breakfast. Its in the same neighborhood as the Denit and Midmost. In Madrid this company has several hotels under the "PetitPalace Hotelity" name. They seem to have a variety of hotels and again if you join you get a discount. I'm not sure which location in Madrid was actually recommended by another Forum person, but there seems to be a variety of options. I always look at the Google reviews and sort by most recent. Most of these are in the 4.4 to 4.5 range that I have looked at.
