My husband and I are planning to spend 10 days each in Barcelona and Madrid in October.
We've looked at Booking.com and your head can spin trying to weed through the apartment listings.
We're looking for an apartment w/cooking facilities and a washing machine. Price range between $100-150/night. Quiet location - that could be a challenge :)
Any recommendations?

I rented 2 apartments from Negre Apartments. The wife is American and the husband Spanish. The apartments are in L'Eixample area of Barcelona. It is more residential but has many cafes and restaurants. The streets and sidewalks are comfortably wide. The apartments are close to the Verdaguer metro stop Walking distance to Sagrada Familia. Many Gaudi buildings in this area. Very easy booking process. Neighborhood market a block away. Not as large as La Boqueria .

We rented Valencia St. Balcony apartment which I do not recommend. The main bedroom faces the street with a bar directly across. Very noisy on the weekends. No 1 BR apartments, but the 2 BR ones are reasonably priced at the low end of your price range.
Do you consider Airbnb? I had an apartment between Atocha and the museums in Madrid. Not fancy, but clean and quiet, with kitchen and washer/dryer combo. Most importanly, reliable landlord.
In Barcelona I can recommend the BCNGOTIC apartments. Perfect location. English speaking manager, on a pedestrian street, very accommodating, elevator. Half a block from a metro stop, but most sights within walking distance. Same neighborhood as the Picasso museum. If you are staying ten days you may qualify for their long term stay discount of 10%. I have stayed there for a month at a time on three different trips. Barcelona is a wonderful city.
