We will be in Barcelona Jan 5-9, 2025. Is it necessary or recommended to purchase tickets to key sites (e.g., Basilica de la Sagrada Familia, Picasso Museum) in advance? Thanks.

Probably necessary, always recommended. The Palace of Catalan Music (IMO a must-see) usually needs advanced purchase. I'd opt for a guided tour in English. Be sure to stop at the street-level cafe, it's beautiful. You may also want to buy tickets to a concert. Here's the official TI site for happenings in the city on your dates.
