Barcelona hotel prices

I read the warning in the Barcelona guidebook about hotel prices but I am astonished at the quotes I am getting from some hotels relative to the prices in the book. I just received an email from Hotel Inglaterra giving me a price range of 726 to 846 Euros for a double room with bathroom for late September into early October. The price given in the guidebook was 119 to 169 Euros.

Is that price for the entire stay or just one night?

Just two comments: average prices of hotels in Barcelona can be more expensive than Paris. Prices vary greatly depending on the events happening in the city (festivals, congresses, etc.) and that's especially true when several big events coincide during the same dates. In Sept/Oct, you have several international congresses held in the city, our National Day (11th), the Festival of La Mercè (18-24th), etc.

Barb, I just looked up Hotel Inglaterra Barcelona on booking.com and for a double for Sept 21 - 23, as an example, the price quoted was about 160 USD per night. Your quote must be for several nights, or for some very luxurious suite, no?

It must've been something, Larry! We did finally find a good hotel for a decent price on Priceline. And, after that I heard from Hostal Oliva (from Rock's book) and they offered a good price but we had already booked. Really looking forward to the stay!

I found 160 euros per night, for a double, is pretty average in Barcelona (and Madrid). Almost anywhere else in Spain 100 euros per night is high. We traveled for a month, roughly half the nights were under 50 euros and at least two thirds were under 65 for decent rooms in small, family-run, hostals (not hostels). The only other places over 100 euros were San Sebastian (117 euros for a great room at the top price) and Sevilla (350 euros for four nights at a nice hotel during April Fair, but could have been double or even triple that, during festivals, if I hadn't found a good deal). Barcelona and Madrid stand out as both expensive and less nice than you can find elsewhere in Spain.
