Barcelona Hotel - ME Barcelona, Kimpton Vividora or The One Barcelona

Hello - I will be in Barcelona in August - tourist trip. I have been before, my travel companion has not. We would be seeing all the toursist sites/ dinners/ good meals. 5 nights. After some research on this forum - I booked ME Barcelona. I have amex plat - and its a fine hotel - so i was excited about that. But I have been reading some reviews - and they are mixed. I am not sure if its just a huge chain hotel type place as opposed to a lux 5 star. I started looking at the below: Looking for a nice luxurious 5star hotel with a rooftop pool/ relaxing areas as we are thr 5 nights and good location too.

1) Kimpton Vividora - seems to be closer to Gothic quarters, rooftop
2) The One Barcelona - seems to be a bit further away from ME barcelona as well

Out of these 3 - which would you pick for most luxurious/ best location? I was super pumped about ME - but not sure if its just a big chain hotel of melia and not classy/ lux. These hotels are about 2k for 5 nights.....

thaank you :)

Are those hotels the only ones under consideration?

I've never stayed in any of them, so cannot help there.
The fact that the ME is a Melia, with more than 160 rooms would put me off, too. But that hotel has a fantastic location. I prefer not to stay on the Gothic Quarter, but closer to the location of the Melia.

Are there other 5-star hotels close to the ME with a pool? If so, maybe take a look at those; maybe a smaller hotel?? The Monument looks good.

Again, I don't know the hotels you mentioned. I've been looking at various hotels for my own stay this coming winter, so will be interested in where you end up and how you like the place.

Thanks - thats helpful. Isnt the Gothic Quarter location better? More cute/ authentic vibes? I am worried if the ME location is too commercial / big streets/ too much traffic? i was looking at these two coz they are amex plat hotels but can expand my search.

But what benefit are you really getting by booking with Amex Plat? I'm always tempted, but those upgrades rarely seem to materialize, for me. I like to book direct with the hotels.

Gothic Quarter IS more atmospheric--narrow streets. old stone historic buildings, but also many tourists and some people do not like to wander down some of the more secluded streets late at night. (I'm not one of them, though)

You are right that the ME location, in the Eixample, has the wider streets and is more commercial, so not as unique as the Gothic Quarter. But closer to the Gaudi sights. It's a difficult decision but I would rather stay in the area of the ME. More of the restaurants that I like, for one thing. There are a lot of threads about choosing an area in the city--see what you can find here and on travel sites like Fodor.s.com. You really will not go wrong in either area.......

Like I mentioned, I will be looking for a visit this winter, and am also torn between a few choices.
If you do want to stay in Gothic Quartet, look at the Mercer; I stayed at their Sevilla property and thought it was wonderful. Not sure if the one has a pool, though, so do check...

so i just started looking at the Majestic Barcelona which seems more traditional but has a good rate with breakfast included and cheaper than ME Barcelona.

and also looked at NH Collection Barcelona Gran Hotel Calderón

Feel like i am between

Majestic Barcelona $1850 5 nights including breakfast
NH Collection Barcelona Gran Hotel Calderón $1600 5 nights no breakfast
ME Barcelona $1800 5 nights including breakfast

Thoughts?

I've answered you on TA forums and gave you my opinion about the Melia. I like smaller hotels but I don't care about a rooftop, so...

I've done a ton of reading for my next stay in Barcelona. On my short list now are the MONUMENT, the MAJESTIC and the ALMA. I'm not sure that really helps you but I thought I'd out it out there..

I do not prefer to stay in the Barrio Gotico but if this will be your first visit, that area is very atmospheric. I think you ought to decide on a neighborhood first, and then a hotel. And you are the only person who can decide if the savings is worth it.....

Can you answer my question, above, about the benefits of booking with Amex Platinum?

Amex plat- free breakfast, upgrade, $100 resort credit and the $200 hotel credit can be used for the plat

That’s what I imagined. So it does not add up to much since breakfast is included with the rooms I book. There is no resort fee on a city hotel. Upgrades almost never are granted. So what are you getting apart from a free dinner IF you want to dine in the hotel??? I have Platinum but almost never book with them. You can also check Virtuoso. They also offer upscale hotels and I’ve used them a few times for hotels in Spain. But chasing those promised upgrades usually ends in disappointment.

Anyway. Let us know where you decide to book and how it turns out. I will go for a week or so in March before flying to Jerez.
