Can anyone recommend some good beaches in the Barcelona area? I will be there for 10 days in July and although I will visit the beaches in Barcelona I hear they do not compare to the ones North and South of the city. I prefer not overly crowded, good surf and nice scenery. Thanks is advance!!

Barceloneta beach is fantastic, right in the city itself.
30 mins south by train to Sitges, a popular seaside area since the 1930s.

I was in Barcelona last July and I did not care for the city beaches. They were crowded and dirty. There were three of us and we always made sure one person stayed with our things to keep them safe. I have enjoyed other beaches in Spain much more than Barcelona. I had also heard that it's better to travel away from the city, but we didn't and I regretted it. However, there is so much to see and do in Barcelona that I didn't really miss more beach time.

Costa Brava is further of course and you definitely need a car.
Look at Llafranc, St Feliu de Guixols, Port de la Selva, Cadaques.
