Suggestions for airport transport to hotel I Barcelona
You can take the metro (the sign is a red diamond with an "M" in the middle)-- very easy to get into town with lots of stops in Barcelona. Get off at the one nearest to your hotel and walk or take the bus or a cab. I was just there for 8 days and used public transportation for all my trips around Barcelona and to/from the airport. If you buy a T-10 or T-30/50 pass (kiosks at the airport) you'll be able to use it on the buses as well. I am not sure why, but the 24-, 48-, 72-hour passes did not work on the bus. Note: when you want to return to the airport you need to by a special airport ticket-- unlike everywhere else you will scan the ticket when you arrive at the airport (as opposed to when you enter the metro station). Hope that helps!
.... which is located where?
I believe the metro requires changing trains, however there is a dedicated Aeropuerto Bus, to/from the airport to various central points in Barcelona, for about 6 euros. That's what we took, a straight shot and it's easy, comes every 5 minutes! (Upon returning to the airport, check which terminal, because there are two different buses, A1 or A2, both available, but going to either terminal 1 or 2.) Using google maps on our smartphone helped us figure out the order of the stops so we knew when to get off.
Sorry, meant to include this link: (you can buy tix online and show your phone if you'd like, that's what we did)

We took the Renfe train in from the airport because we staying right by Passeig de Gràcia and the train stops right there. It only leaves from Terminal Two so we had to take the (free) shuttle bus from T1, bought tickets from the machine and then took the Renfe train past SANTS to Passeig de Gràcia. It was as easy as advertised. There are multiple "R" trains R3, R4 etc so it can be a little tricky reading the maps but it worked out exactly as planned.
If you're staying somewhere else where you need to change to the metro from the train it may be as easy to just take the metro if you have as many changes.

I insist... all the well-intended responses above are useless if Dianne doesn't indicate where is that she wants to go. Barcelona ain't a small city and different parts of the city are best reached using different means of transportation.
The airport is quite close to the city in comparison to many large cities. It can be as little as 15 mins to drive from the airport to Plaça Espanya. Barcelona taxis are quite cheap and may be a good option when you consider luggage and the hotel location.
