Barcelon to Lisbon

I want to rent a car and drive along the coast from Barcelona to Lisbon. My plan is to drive to Valencia, Malaga, Cadiz, to Lisbon.

  1. Do you think driving is a good idea or should I opt for another form of transportation? I wanted to see the coastal towns.
  2. What is it like to rent a car in Spain and drop it off in Portugal in terms of fees, regulations, etc?
  3. Is an American driver's licence enough or do I need something extra?

I appreciate your responses.

My favourite parts of the coast would be
1 From Costa Brava (Barcelona) to Valencia
2 Galicia and Asturias from Santiago de Compostela to Santander
3 Probably all of Portugal's Atlantic coast

You pay very high fees to pick up in one country and drop in another.
I would choose either 1 or 2 above, then make your way to Portugal - Porto-Lisbon-Faro.

Hi Adam,

As djp_syd mentioned, picking up a car in Spain and dropping in Portugal can incur an expensive international drop fee, often as high as $1000! I suggest renting 2 cars, one in Spain and another in Portugal. You could drive Spain's southern coast, then head to Sevilla and drop the car. After a few days, take the bus to the south coast of Portugal, picking up another car in Tavira, Faro or Lagos. Then drive the Algarve and Pacific coast of Portugal up to Lisbon.

You can buy the bus ticket at the station in Sevilla a day or two ahead. See www.alsa.es for schedules. See www.autoeurope.com for car rental options. You wll also need an International drivers license, which you can get at your local AAA office for $15
