To me Avila is totally skippable. I haven't been to El Escorial. Segovia is very interesting and can be visited very easily on your own--no tour required. I'd probably opt just to spend the day in Segovia, taking the train. It appears that even if you buy a last-minute ticket, it will cost no more than €10.30 or €19.50 for the round-trip, depending on which category of fast train you choose. Travel time is 27 minutes each way. (It is possible for a train to sell out, and it might take awhile to buy the tickets at Chamartin Station, so I am not recommending that you wait until the last minute to buy tickets.) The bus trip will take more than twice as long as the train, plus the extra time to get to Avila and El Escorial, so you're going to be spending a lot of time sitting on the bus.

I will agree that at the knocked-down price (assuming there are no sneaky add-ons), you are getting a lot of transportation for a very reasonable amount of momey. However, you're not going to have much time in any of those places.

I think I will follow your advice and head on to Segovia! Should we do El escorial? Or what other place can we visit that a family of 2 adults and 2 kids? I am so thankful for this travel forum!

Toledo is magnificent and very easily reached from Madrid. Again, a round-trip train ticket will be a good deal, and the fare never changes, so you can wait to make those arrangements until you get to Madrid. Toledo (though worth a couple of nights) is a very popular day-trip, so some trains do sell out. This is probably likeliest around weekends and holidays, but Rick warns about sellouts on the latest trains.

That’s a lot for a day. Avila is skippable if you don’t have a lot of time, since the walls and the great view of it from cuatro postes (an overlook on the other side of the road), are the main draw. In El Escorial, it’s all about the monastery. Other than it, there’s nothing else to see and restaurants are pricey. Years ago, my children thought going down the steps into the crypt with the Kings and queens was fun. They were 12 and 14. If you’ve never been there, the Alcazar and aqueduct in Segovia are amazing. The walk from the acqueduct to the Alcazar is mostly up hill if I remember correctly. On my first visit there, the acqueduct still carried water to the city, and one could still drive between one of its arches. With your limited time If you wanted a second day trip, I agree that Toledo would be a good choice.
