ATM issues

I tried Kutxabank to withdraw money using my USBank ATM card but it doesn’t seem to work. The options to withdraw are Savings, Credit or current. Credit and current do not seem to work. I’m wondering what I am doing wrong. Any ideas? If asks if I want to use Euros or dollars and I say Euros. It says it can’t be completed

That is puzzling. I'd have thought "Current" meant "checking account" in this context.

Try an ATM belonging to a different bank. The options may be different--or at least they may be labeled differently.

If your card doesn't work at a different bank's ATM, I'd suspect the problem lies at your bank. Did you file a travel notice? I did that twice at my credit union and still had an issue at the first ATMs I tried. The problem was at my credit union. I had to call them or email them; the issue was corrected within 24 hours. (That might not have happened if it had been over a weekend, I'm guessing.)

US Bank does "recommend" alerting them to travel outside the US. Besides calling the number on the card, they also suggest either adding info via the website or the app:

How to add travel notifications using Online banking

  • Choose an account from your dashboard then select the Account services tab.
  • Select Travel notifications from under Alerts & notifications.
  • Choose Add a trip or if there's a previously entered notification you want to modify, select Edit trip or Delete trip.
  • Enter your trip details, then select Save.
  • Enter another country, then choose Add to include up to five destinations.

How to add travel notifications using the U.S. Bank Mobile App

  • Open the main menu then select Manage cards.
  • Select the card you'll be traveling with, then Travel notification.
  • Select Add trip, or if there's a previously entered notification you want to modify, select Update trip or Delete trip.
  • Enter your trip details, then select Save.
  • Select + Add destination to up to five countries.

I think it may be the bank notification. I just went online And I added it. I’m going to try it later today and see if it works. If it doesn’t, I’ll come back. Thanks, everyone!

Nope. Still didn’t work. I did the travel notice. No bueno. Grrr. So far I haven’t needed cash but it would be handy for tipping and markets. I think I’ll give a try to other banks other than Kutxabank. Reluctant to do the Eurobank ATMs all over the place.

Patrick, when I notify my bank that I will be traveling, it normally takes 24 hours for the notice to take effect. Give it some time.

Also, if you need cash, don’t sweat the Euronet machines. They are nice to avoid when you have a choice, but if you don’t - it’s not a big deal in the big picture.

Kutxabank still didn’t work but I got it to work on a BBVA machine. Cost me 7 euros to take 100. Kinda pricey. My U.S. Bank account with exchange shows $114.28. Oh well. I guess I have some euros now. Thanks all.

Yeah, BBVA and Santander, seem to have the highest use fee, not everywhere, but usually 7 euro for a withdrawal, I found others with 5 euro, on my last trip a year and a half ago, I did find "no fee" ATMs, but not this trip. Of course, I have only used ATMs a few times in about two weeks.

However, I am finding myself using more cash this trip, than on the last several trips since the pandemic. We are a bit off the "A-list" tourist path, a several restaurants that were cash only (Lisbon, Tavira, Cadiz, and Tarifa), and we do a lot of things that are cheap, under five euro, including a couple local museums, Coffee and churros, an afternoon wine or beer, gelato, etc. The locals seem to be using cash in many places, if under 10 euro or so, I follow suit.
