Asturias Region

Has anyone traveled to the Asturias region? Any thoughts on spending a week exploring this region. Things to see and places to stay. We will be coming from Florence.

Thank you
Rich

Yes! It’s fun and interesting. We stayed near Llanes on a farm. This put us at the eastern end of Asturias so we split sightseeing between Asturias and Cantabria during our 5 night June 2024 stay.

Asturias is pretty small, so consider visiting places in Galicia, Cantabria, and northern Castilla y La Mancha too. In that area we’ve stayed in Ribadeo, León, and years ago, Oviedo.

Places we’ve visited are cathedral beach, Astorga, Valencia de Don Juan, Ponferrada, Cangas de Onis, and Covadonga in Picos de Europa National Park. We drove from Ribadeo over to Santillana Del Mar. Although it’s in Galicia we enjoyed Lugo with its Roman wall surrounding the town.

Places I have bookmarked to visit next time I’m in that area include the 9th century churches, Iglesia de Santa María del Naranco, Church of San Miguel de Lillo, and Iglesia de San Julián de los Prados - Santullano,

We are fans of Spain’s Parador hotels. Ones in that area include Ribadeo, Corias, Gijón, Cangas de Onis, and Fuente Dé.

Three villages in Asturias on Spain’s Prettiest Villages list are Bulnes, Llastres, Tazones, and Torazu.

The Spain.info site also lists some towns and cities to visit. The Asturias Tourism website might also be helpful.

Matt
If you were happy with the stay on the farm, could you share the name of the place?
Thanks

In León and Ribadeo we stayed at the Paradors. The Parador in León at Plaza San Marcos was outstanding and underwent renovations shortly after we were there. The Parador in Ribadeo afforded great views, but was in need of some renovation. The town is pretty small with no wow sites and one night there is sufficient. There is a Templar built church. We stayed at both Paradors in 2017. In 2019 we stayed at Hotel Monumento Pazo de Orbán e Sangro in Lugo. It was charming and right next to the wall. At the time, all three had free parking.

Asturias is "small??" We had more than two weeks with a car and barely delved into lnto all we wanted to see.

Have you read about the Cuenca's mineras?
Picos de Europa?
All of the glorious port towns?
Oviedo?

Not saying there isn’t a lot to see in Asturias, because there is, but when compared to other regions, it is small by area. Not the smallest, but smaller than Galicia, Castilla y León, Castilla y La Mancha, Andalucía, etc. I guess it comes down to what one considers small.

Agree that Asturias is a relatively small region of Spain…and that it is a lovely area to visit. In September 2024, as part of a longer trip, we spent several nights in Oviedo with day trips to the coastal towns, our favorite of which was Cudillero. Highly recommend Bar-Tienda La Gijonesa in Cudillero for lunch. We enjoyed Oviedo too…though not the famous hard cider so much. Instead, there is a small bar, Kibo Bar, across from the cathedral that makes killer Negronis. For a hotel in Oviedo, we were happy at Barceló Oviedo Cervantes. Then, we spent several days in Picos de Europa where, for us, the highlight was Covadonga. In Cangas de Onis, we had a delicious, casual meal at Verdejonegro Bistro & Wine Bar.

With a week, you can take your time and enjoy. Have a fun trip.

Respectfully, if anyone thinks Asturias is ‘small,’ it probably just means they didn’t do their homework or dig deep enough. There’s a wealth of things to see and do in Asturias. Of course, it’s perfectly fine if those things don’t appeal to someone personally, but calling it ‘small’ or saying there’s ‘not much to see’ really misses the richness of the place.

@Enric - I believe you misread my post. I said Asturias was small by area not with regard to things to do. Those are two distinctly different things. I edited the one sentence so hopefully it is clearer now.

Asturias is a delight!

I really like the extremely rugged coast west of Avilés (Cudillero, Luarca, etc.), but the coast east of Gijón is beautiful too and has much better beaches. Then of course you have the Picos de Europa range in the east (stunning); Oviedo is an interesting city; there are some prehistoric sites; and very wild (by European standards) natural preserves in the interior (e.g. Somiedo).

Staying somehwere around Llastres / Lastres is both charming and convenient if you want a single base. If you can afford Palacio de Luces, look no further, otherwise there are plenty of options.
If you'd rather split your stay, you could split it between e.g. Llanes in the east and Cudillero or Luarca in the west.

A car is essential. Crossing the region is very fast on the motorways, but secondary roads are twisty and slow for the most part.
