Arts & Culture Opportunities

Hello All,
Traveling to northern Spain and France this fall. Can you suggest venues you have enjoyed for flamenco (dance &/or guitar), regional and classical music performance &/or theatre? We will be in Madrid, Bilbao & San Sebastian. Also on the French side, visiting coastal cities and villages. (We have plans to visit the outstanding museums and galleries in this region).
Many thanks for your suggestions.

It's rather regrettable that after a full month, you still have no answer to this question -- I'm not sure whether that says anything about the forum in general. (If you had asked for recommendations for hot, trendy new restaurants, you might have had over 20 responses by now.) And I wish I could answer myself, but I haven't been to any of the cities you mention except Madrid.
And regarding Madrid, I did once see a great, completely un-touristy flamenco dance performance in a small quaint venue somewhere in the La Latina neighborhood, not too far from the Plaza Mayor -- one of the more rewarding experiences I've had in Madrid, and I've had several. But I can't recall what it was called, or exactly where it was; and on my next visit I wasn't able to find it again. (So I guess that wasn't too helpful. But I learned of the performance from a humble notice someone had pasted on the doorway as I passed by on one my my flâneur-type wanderings, so be vigilant!)

Otherwise, I'm sure you are already aware of Madrid's trio of exceptional art museums. Also, look into the Madrid's Royal Theatre, or Teatro Real (they have a website) -- I recall, on one of my visits, several years ago, seeing an intriguing autumn program of classical Spanish dramas and comedies being announced on a large outdoor poster -- and which I had missed by just a few days.

I know I haven't helped much; and so if you are still seeking answers to your question, perhaps consider signing into the Fodors forum and posting your question on their Spain branch -- I haven't done a formal study, but I have formed the impression that if you are looking for arts and culture advice, that may be where you are more likely to find it. (Along with advice on hot, trendy new restaurants, if you require that too.)

Thank you both for your reply to my old post. Although there were no replies on this forum, I found many answers from an experienced Basque traveler: she has given me so many ideas, we will likely need another trip to experience them all!

Hi Josie,

I think I responded to another forum of yours since we are doing a similar trip during the same time so naturally I keep encountering you on here when searching for myself :)

Did you get any good recommendations from your Basque contact on live music? If so, would you mind sharing? I was also looking in Madrid and will message you should I come across anything there. So far we just have a soccer game planned in San Sebastian and are leaving the nights open for spontaneity in both towns.

Thanks again.
