I've been reading on the news about "meltdowns" at Spain airports, particularly Madrid and Barcelona (El Prat). We are viewing videos of hours long waits at times. We will be arriving in Barcelona for a flight the beginning of March and back to the US mid-March. Does anyone have any experience with the conditions at Barcelona airport recently? Thanks so much.
I think you might be referring to reports of a computer failure back in July last year, so not exactly recently...
Barcelona had a lot of cancellations last week due to Storm Nils, but when we arrived on Friday the airport was fine - no queues, no issues at all, and you're not arriving until March, so weather will be different then too.
There are random delays at any EU airport at the moment due to the introduction of EES. No way to predict. Airports have been given authority to suspend EES if delays are too great, and the deadline for full implementation has been pisuhed back from April.
I flew into Barcelona two weeks ago. I wouldn't say it was in "meltdown". It was clear that they are still working out the kinks in the EES system. An IT guy was hurrying from malfunctioning kiosk to malfunctioning kiosk. But the line kept moving, I don't think I waited more than twenty minutes, and I had no trouble at the kiosk.
It may depend on flights (ie how many at any time), but there was no queue to register biometrics when I arrived.
Thanks to you all.
