Any advice for a 2 week road trip to Basque Country, beginning/ending in Barcelona?

Hi there,

Long time reader, first time writer! My wife and I are planning a 2 week road trip to Basque Country, starting and ending in Barcelona. We're arriving in mid-Febrary, leaving in early March, 2017. We have some ideas (sketched below), and would truly appreciate feedback from people who have traveled to or lived in the regions we want to visit. Our hopes for this trip are to explore Basque culture, cuisine, and natural beauty.

  1. Arrive in Barcelona, rent a car.
  2. Take a couple days to drive the slower, scenic route to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France (possibly Barcelona>Graus>Ainsa>Sabinanigo>Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port).
  3. Explore San Sebastian and Hondarribia using Saint-Jean-de-Luz as a base.
  4. Go to Bilbao, see a game at San Mames and the Guggenheim, visit San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and Guernica using Bilbao as a base.
  5. Savor the Rioja wine regions, taking a couple days to drive from Bilbao to Barcelona. (Any tips for small, quality family-owned vineyards?!)
  6. Return to Barcelona.

Thanks for taking the time to share your advice.

Cheers,

Mark

Are you picking up the car and leaving Barcelona on arrival, or are you planning to overnight? If overnighting, I would take a train to Zaragoza and pick up a car after a day or two in the city.

Look at the routing San Sebastian > Pamplona > Rioja > Vitoria-Gasteiz > Bilbao
Also, look at dropping your car in Bilbao and departing directly from there.
Or train it to Madrid/Barcelona for your flight home.

Thanks for your advice, David! I will definitely consider renting the car outside of Barcelona, likely in Zaragoza.

Much obliged,

Mark
