Anti Tourist issues in Barcelona?

Never been to Spain. I am in the planning phase of a My Way Tour next April. Has anyone on the forum have actual experince with walking the "tourist areas" of this city?

The internet and other media have exaggerated and amplified the level of the few protests in Barcelona.

While you should always use a money belt or secure those items and your cell phone in some way— I experienced no issues with theft and saw lots of police in the “tourist areas.”

Stay in tourism areas. Don't wander and invade local residential areas. You will be fine.

Would you please clarify what you mean by "anti tourist issues"?

Stay in tourism areas. Don't wander and invade local residential areas.

That doesn't really make sense in Barcelona. The tourist areas are residential areas.

My guess is most people on the Spain forum have walked the tourist areas. Question answered. My guess is that isn’t your main question.

Like others have said, be aware of your surroundings and know there are pickpockets ready to take advantage if given the opportunity, but that advice is the same for any tourist destination.

Go and have a great time.

I was asked what I meant by "anti tourist issues. See below:

.Recent protests in Barcelona against mass tourism involve actions like using water guns on tourists and targeting hotels with stickers and smoke bombs, driven by concerns over high rents, neighborhood gentrification, and strain on local resources. Activists argue that tourism negatively impacts residents by driving up housing costs and displacing locals, leading to slogans such as "One more tourist, one less resident". While many Barcelona residents still support tourism, these protests highlight growing local frustration with the impact of overtourism.

We were in Barcelona on Oct 11-17. No anti tourist activity. We walked everywhere and down many non tourist areas, no issue. The only issue is if you go to Las Ramblas, and the associated giant market place, do not carry a purse, do not have your phone out, don't wear expensive watches or jewelry on your arms/wrist. We witnessed a man run behind someone and grab his watch right off his wrist, the man flipped over. The robber went so fast and disappeared in an alley. Las Ramblas is all torn up for repairs, and it seems at a pace that will never end since they are using brushes every so many minutes to look for artifacts.

I highly recommend some walking tours. Airbnb now has "experiences". We got some nice tours with very small group, one time 3 of us and 1 time 6 of us. The architectural tour is great, you don't go in any of the Gaudi buildings, you can do that on your own, but it gives you a better understanding of the period. We used the same guide for a walking tour of the Gothic quarter. Much cheaper than the big commercial companies, fun and interesting guides.

Just got back. Loved the city. First advice don’t stay in an Airbnb. Stay in a hotel. The main reason for people being upset is loss of apartments for locals. Respect that and stay in a hotel.
We walked everywhere. Never felt unsafe. Did wear a money belt. It is a very clean city.
The only anti tourist thing we saw was some graffiti. Not a big deal.
Think it is about respect. This is the city they live in and work in. Respect them as they are trying to go to work etc. Don’t spread out over a crowded sidewalk. Let them walk by as you stop to see how amazing everything is.
Enjoy!
