Antequera Info requested

I am considering going to Antequera in March. I would like to take the train from Cordoba but notice that the Santa Ana station is quite a distance outside the city. Is it easy to find transportation into the city from that train station? We are planning on one day in Antequera before heading on to Ronda. Is one day sufficient? Is Antequera worth a stop? Does anyone have a hotel recommendation for Antequera?

Thanks,
Cathy

Hi Cathy,

I don't have information about Antequera, but I'm just wondering... Are you skipping Granada?

Yes, I'm skipping Granada. I've been to Granada several times. On this trip, I wanted to go to places that either I haven't been to or my husband hasn't been to. I've been to Cordoba and Ronda before, but my husband has not. Neither of us has been to Antequera or Arcos de la Frontera, so I was thinking of doing the following:

Train from Madrid to Cordoba (already have tickets)
2 nights in Cordoba
1 night in Antequera
1 night in Ronda
1 night in Arcos de la Frontera
2 nights in Sevilla
3 nights in Madrid

I have the train tickets from Madrid to Cordoba and from Sevilla to Madrid. I also have hotel reservations in Madrid and Cordoba. I'm trying to figure out the middle part of the trip (Antequera, Ronda, and Arcos).

We spent about 20 hours in Antequera in October and thought it was a hidden jewel. I can not answer your question about transportation from the train station as we had a car. We stayed at the Numero Uno Hotel and had dinner there. I reviewed it on Trip Advisor and thought it was fabulous. We did visit the TI not far from the hotel and the people there were extraordinarily helpful and spoke great English and were instrumental in pulling a plan together for us. We visited the Alcazaba (the headphone tour was great) and stopped into 2 churches. It was all so much more fun that I expected since it was designed simply as a place to break up our drive from Cadiz to Grenada.

That is a route that begs for a car. The driving isn't difficult, except for finding your way out of Cordoba and into Sevilla, but that's what GPS is for. That also gives you the opportunity to stop at other pueblos blancos before and after Ronda. There's no train to Arcos so you'd need a bus from Ronda. There're only a couple buses a day from Arcos to Sevilla, so you'd probably need to take the bus to Jerez and then the train to Sevilla without a car.

Don't go to Antequera on Sunday (sights close early) or Monday (most sights are closed). I stayed at Hotel Plaza San Sebastian, great central location with a nearby secure parking site, lovely place, walked everywhere in town. Because I stayed Sunday night, I missed seeing the prehistoric dolmens outside the town - didn't do my homework!
