Andalusia or Basque Country "base" for Mixed Age Group?

Hoping for some help choosing between these two intriguing regions and for suggestions on where to "base" for a group travleing from Boston that includes 3 ~40 year olds, 2 ~67 YOs and 1 will be 4.5 YO at time of travel.

When my wife and I (40) have traveled Europe in the past we would spend 2-3 nights a place and then hop to another. With our daughter in tow we are thinking it would be best to pick a "base" for a week, relax and experience the culture while taking some day trips around the region.

Since we will have 5 adults to 1 child there will be opportunity for groups of adults to go exploring while someone stays back with our daughter. We all love nature (including the 4YO), food and wandering interesting neighborhoods. While we aren't looking for a beach vacation / resorty place there is something to be said for how much amusement a child can get with a bucket and some sand!

We plan to rent a car for daytrips and ideally would base somewhere big enough to be interesting for the adults but where we could potentially rent a larger apartment or villa with some outdoor space... so not a big city. An example of what we are thinking is one year we stayed at the bottom of Montepulciano in Tuscany, drove around the region during the day and walked the streets in the evening.

If we chose Basque Country we would target June which I realize will still be cool but my wife runs a summer camp so July / August are out. If we chose Andalucia we would target May (April?) to avoid the real heat.

Any thoughts on which region would be better suited to our needs and potential base locations are GREATLY apprecaited. Thanks in advance!

Well that's a very general question, basically your criteria covers all regions of Spain. Could you narrow your interests more?

If Andalucia is your pick definitely go in April weather wise and there are a lot of festivals going on that time like Semana Santa or la Feria de Abril. Montepulciano only has about 15k inhabitants so you are really looking for more like a small town? For Andalucia I'd suggest Úbeda or Baeza, maybe Córdoba is the largest I'd go. Los Pueblos Blancos are not a good option as it's tricky to daytrip from there to other parts of Andalucia.

As for Basque Country, I'd actually expand you search to include all of northern Spain, including Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia. Personally I think the Galicia region works best for the type of travel you want, it's square and a central location like Lugo or Ourense can give you easy access to most of the region. But those cities might be too big for what you are looking for.

Honestly I'd take a look at the underrated Extremadura region for April, that seems to align well with the type of travel you want, some have likened it to the "Tuscany of Spain". Extremadura is a land of Crusader Castles, Moorish Strongholds, Royal Monasteries, and impressive Roman Ruins. The home of Infamous Conquistadors and Holy Roman Emperors, best part it's still undiscovered by most foreign tourists. Cáceres‎ or Trujillo would do nicely as a home base to explore the region.

Here's a nice article about travel in Extremadura from the lonely planet - https://www.lonelyplanet.com/articles/unexplored-spain-roadtripping-around-extremadura

Hope this helps :)

Hey, that's not fair, I didn't include Catalonia!!!! (because we went there on our Honeymoon) :)

I take your point, I am really stuck between North and South and since it impacts the travel dates am trying to make that first decision with time to figure out the details. My parents are extremly stressed about booking the single dogsitter they trust on the planet.. sigh.

I don't think the size / population matters so much as the density which can be hard to figure out from a guidebook... The Montepulciano example is probably more appropriate for how easy it was to day trip by car and that while small was packed with dozens of restaurants, wine cellars etc.

Really I am trying to find a base where a car is manageable, there is potential for a rental with some outdoor space. If there are smaller cities that fit the bill thats fantastic as I'm sure the adults would love more to explore vs a small town.

In terms of interests, thinking about having our daughter with us... scenic drives, food, kid friendly cultural events she wouldn't experince at home (I have read many of the festivals are very kid friendly?).

Thanks Miucia - In fact Portugal was the first place the rest of my family wanted to go, but my perhaps incorrect impression was things are a bit more spread out so it might require destination hopping more?
