Andalucia With a Pregnant Wife and kid

Hi All,

I want your help in planning a trip to Andalusia in the 2nd week of February for our 10th Wedding anniversary but there are a couple of special conditions :). My wife will be 5 months pregnant and we will be taking our 4 year old with us. We live in Boston, USA and are looking to fly direct to Lisbon first (TAP Portugal) as it is 6 hour flight. Overall the focus of this trip would be to take in the sights, stay in a decent hotel, eat good food, see some shows, etc. Nothing strenuous as it wont be possible to do.

My high level plan looks like this
Feb 9th - Flight For Lisbon
Feb 10th - Take some rest Spend the day in Lisbon
Feb 11th - Take a Flight to Andalusia (Seville, Cordoba or Granada)
Feb 17th - Get Back to Lisbon
Feb 18th - Flight back to Boston

I need your help in figuring out what to do, where to go, where to stay etc in those 6 days while we are in Andalusia . Again,Ideally our day would involve exploring sights, light walking, eating at fun places, catching a show in the night, etc. We are open to keeping a big city as the base and then exploring other towns as day trips OR visiting one city for 3 days and another one for 3 days if that is recommended.

So Am I crazy to think of this kind of plan :)? We want to do this trip because this would be our last big trip for the next few years. Looking for your great recommendations

Thanks again.

One thing to keep in mind is that Spain operates on a schedule that many of us far older than 3 years old find a challenge. It may be slightly moderated in winter (I trust someone with experience will confirm or refute that), but dinnertime starts around 10 PM. You'll hear people coming back from dinner at midnight or later. Since dinner is late, so is lunch--about 2 to 4 PM. Fortunately, there are tapas available prior to the dinner hour and (at least in some places) before lunch as well.

I'm not sure what the eating schedule does to the starting times of evening events, but I imagine it is not helpful for folks who are not night owls. Just as a starting point, you might Google for information on flamenco performances in Seville and Granada, just to check when they begin.

Cordoba can be seen on a day-trip from Seville, but by all accounts it is a worthwhile overnight stop itself. As a smaller city, your family might find it more congenial on this trip.

Granada requires a local hotel. Based on other posts here, I think you'll find no tickets available for the Alhambra during your travel period. You might be able to pick one up from your hotel or another source, but I'm not sure that will work out. I'm sort of doubtful that there would be non-stop flights between Lisbon and Granada, but I haven't checked. Skyscanner.com is a good source for European flight information.

You are not crazy. I travelled plenty of times in my second trimester with my first born (she was 3 years): hiked in Switzerland and Cinque Terre. If your wife is healthy and active, then there is no reason why this trip would be different because she is pregnant.

Feb 9th: Fly directly into Granada or Seville. Don not "waste" a day in Lisbon. Check in a hotel and going back to the airport the following morning sounds exhausting.

FYI, if you decide to include Ronda, try to stay at the Parador of Ronda. Then right outside on the ridge there is a path, follow it, pass the bull statue, until you reach a playground. The views are marvelous. Your 4 years old will love it. You can have lunch at the El Quinque, next to the Parador and watch flamenco. My 2 and 4 years old were fascinated.

Skip Lisbon this time around. There are many beautiful sights in Andalusia.

Not crazy! In February it won't be hot (the heat was the most miserable part of pregnancy for me) and Spain is pretty easygoing as far as kids. Dinner is late - after 10 - but when I take my kids we sometimes have "dinner" early at places serving tapas. Shows are often late, but not always - some are early for tourists others are meant to be pre-dinner, meaning they start at 7 or 8 and end in time for those wanting a dinner on Spanish time.

Take advantage of the siesta - after lunch things really do close and it's a good time to go to the hotel and rest. Save your energy for the evening sightseeing and just wandering around in the evening.

Traveling with smaller kids I found day trips pretty difficult. My kids, at least, liked to go back to the apartment and rest (note that the siesta is perfect for this!). Having a "home base" to take a fussy kid to, or just to rest as a tired pregnant lady, is important. You can handle it for one day trip that is close and easy, but doing it multiple days gets tiring, IMO. So I'd suggest splitting between Seville and Granada with a day trip (really a half-day is fine) to Cordoba from Seville.
BUT I have read on here that Alhambra tickets are sold out for the next couple months. There are other ways to get them - tourist cards, through a hotel, etc. Look into this - if you can't get tickets then perhaps you don't want to take the effort to get to Granada. I love Granada even apart from the Alhambra, but it does take time and effort that you may not want to spend if you can't see the main sight.

Thank yiu Mira , Arya and Acraven. Each of you gave pretty good insights that has helped me plan a little bit more. So I booked my flight tickets and this is what we are planning to do: Stay from Feb 10th - Feb 13th In Malaga and then from Feb 13th to Feb 17th in Seville. The flight comes into Malaga and we go back from Seville.
I will be reaching Malaga around 11 am on Saturday Feb 10th and plan to check out on Feb 13th for Seville. I have looked at this forum and other resources for things to do in Malaga and these are the things that look interesting to me.

Day 1: 10th Feb: Saturday: Given that we would be arriving in Malaga after a transcontinental flight and may need to rest up for a few hours before we venture outside, I was thinking of taking it easy and strolling through Mercado Central de Atarazanas and/or Plaza de la Constitucion- La Calle Larios and having dinner over there. Would that be a good idea?

Day 2: 11th Feb Sunday: See most of the sights in Malaga like (Roman Theatre, Alcazaba, Castillo de Gibralfaro & Parque de Malaga ). Was initially thinking of doing a hop on hop off bus tour so that we can cover most of the sights without worrying about transportation but have seen some nasty reviews on tripadvisor on the way its run and reliability. Does anyone here have any experience? If not hop on hop off, are taxis easily available to move from one attraction to the other?
Also, I saw that its the last day of Carnival in Malaga and there might be some special festivities going on that day. Does anyone know what's the most fun part and where does it happen? Its always fun to partake in a carnival so hoping to catch a little bit of it.

Day 3: 12th Feb Monday: I was thinking of doing a day trip to Granada for Alhambra and city tour. I am aware that the direct tickets are already sold out online but I do see that there are a few tours & granada card available if I were to pay a little bit extra. Is it worth going to Granada for a day or would you suggest doing something else (or a different day trip may be). I am planning to check out Cordoba for Mezquita and also Alcazar while in Sevilla. Does it make sense to do all 3 in one trip or would it be more of the same after a while?
Also, I was looking to stay in Novotel for a few reasons. One it has a small kitchenette which may be useful with a kid, it is reasonable (450 for 3 nights) and other it looks like it is close to most of the things. Do you have a good recommendation of any other hotel that would be a lot of fun to stay in or in center of everything?
Thanks again for all your inputs and I sincerely appreciate your help in planning this trip.

Thank you Jen and djp_syd. We did check with the airline and got the clearance so we should be good.

Do any of you recommend stopping by in Cordoba for a half-day trip on way from Malaga to Sevilla (as it falls in between). The only worry I would have is where I would store the luggage ? All the research I have done so far mentions that there are lockers in the bus station next to the train station but not sure of the size of the lockers as we will have two check in bags and 2 carry ons.
