Greetings and I am a new poster to the Rick Steves Travel Forums. My wife will be celebrating her 50th birthday on 9/29/15 and we are planning to spend 14-18 days primarily in southern Spain. We might fly into Lisbon first and spend 2-3 days at a farm/B&B run by friends of ours in Sintra - Quinta de Scoto and then to Seville. I have been doing a lot of reading about the area and both Alia and I are serious fans of staying in one or few places for longer times [4-5 nights at least] and focusing on the aimless wandering, food consuming and people-watching and architectural viewing aspects of travel. Would love to be able to experience local events, markets and performances - including, of course, flamenco and ...?? We also both quite like being able to hang out in a small town for a few days, sit in the town center at breakfast and dinner - drive or train or bus to nearby locations for the day. Any guidance, advice and help in the planning would be very much appreciated. Regards to all, Jerry
If you have been researching the area, you know there are many small villages that would be lovely. I did a trip in 2010 that was totally in Andalusia and it was great. We started out in Granada for 4 nights then rented a car and drove to a small village called Gaucin, where we stayed for a week. It is a lovely while village with very narrow streets and lovely views. We did day trips to Ronda, Gibraltar and a number of other white villages. We then drove to Sevilla, turned in the car and stayed 5 nights. While there we did a day trip to Córdoba before taking the train to Madrid for the flight back home.
It was a lovely trip and I also went in the fall. There are lots of apartment rentals in the various white villages and my memory is that vacation rentals in the area are very reasonable. I didn't care for the Costa del Sol area due to the congestion, but inland felt truly old Spain.

Take the map and google and be sure to look to the images of wherever.
Ensure you have enough else to entertain and keep you interested with your 'small'.
Ensure if using public transport you are able to to exit and enter wherever to suit you. Frequency and times of buses and trains are not scheduled around you the tourist.
Hi Jerry, My husband and I stayed with Tony, Penny and Charlotte at Quinta de Scoto in 2010 and loved every minute of our time there. When we left, we drove straight to Ronda for a couple of nights. It was a long drive but we enjoyed Ronda. It was the only place in Andalucía we visited on that trip. We are returning to Andalucía this May and are staying in one place for almost 3 weeks and taking day trips with our rental car. We are staying near Iznajar in a house that looks delightful with private pool and views. Iznajar is easy day trip close to Granada, Cordoba and Malaga. It will probably take a couple of hours each way to Seville but we plan to make a long day of it. Iznajar sounds like a sweet, small town for hanging out and the area around the lake looks beautiful. You might want to check it out at VRBO or Homeaway, etc. Have fun planning. Velda
Thank you to all for the responses -- very helpful and stimulating.
Velda, if you don't mind me asking you for a few more details --
Did you fly into Lisbon? Where did you fly out of?;
How long a drive from Penny & Tony's place to Ronda?
Did you rent a car in Portugal? Border issues? delays?
Did you drop it off in Spain?
Sounds like you had a great time and a wonderful trip coming up as well this spring.
Thanks again.
Hi Jerry, I have sent a detailed reply directly to you. Velda
