Alsa Bus €1 to use bathroom on bus. Really ???

This is the first time taking buses in Spain (We usually rent car or take train.) Taking Alsa from Salamanca to Porto, I was taken back when needing to use toilet—it cost €1. (The leg from Bilbao to Salamanca was gratis.)

Even the airlines haven’t gone this low. I understand train stations and other public toilets, but on board the bus? Really?!

It didn’t help that, on this five hour trip, the driver sometimes let people off to use the bathroom, and sometimes not (I’m talking about the same stop).

Do others have the same reaction to being charged on board, or am I just whining?

Many will say you are just whining but I get annoyed with having to pay to use a toilet too. Any business should provide paying customers with a clean, free toilet! My opinion!

I have yet to find the toilet on the Alsa bus. Looking back down the aisle, it isn't where they used to be on Canadian buses. So you are ahead of the game there....but it would be annoying to have to pay for it or not be the person who was 'allowed' off the bus. Our trip had a (unscheduled) 30 minute comfort break on one of the routes. Time for a coffee or two, smoke if you want and proper restrooms.

I've never come across this. I assume you mean the toilet on the coach. How did they levy the charge? Was it a coin operated lock on the door?

The driver is required to take a break every two hours - by EU law. During this time passengers are encouraged to use the nearby toilets. If the driver was taking his required break how could he stop some passengers from getting off and using the facilities?

Did he not take his break, or did some people ask to get off just as the bus was about to go again?

The toilet on the bus would have been for emergencies only, really.

Interesting.

Long distance coach drivers in other countries have mandatory rest breaks usually with W/C facilities. How did the driver do a 5 hour drive without at least one rest break?

Well, Ryanair gave the idea serious consideration. Every time consumers are given a choice between service and price, they choose price. That’s one reason BoltBus uses a remote curb in NYC instead of paying for infrastructure at the bus terminal. A bus terminal is so yesterday! We’re Disruptors, like Uber!

Thanks for all the comments. I’ll add some responses.

About the driver breaks. He would stop, but when I asked responded that we were leaving right away. (Which was the actually case in all but the first two, where people would jump off for an un-announced break.)

About paying for a toilet. Yes, I have travelled often enough to understand paying for toilet privileges. But if you were at a restaurant and had to relieve yourself, wouldn’t you be pissed (no pun) if they charged for the toilet?

The airlines have slowly conditioned us to accept paying for everything. (I’m waiting to be charged for air.)—but even they don’t charge for bathroom use...yet.

As a side note, the ability for companies to charge for each and every thing is reallya result of third degree price discrimination, the ability to extract the maximum value from each person for a product. It used to be a big deal and most modem governments thought it was a bad thing to let companies do.

As far as public restrooms, yes, people can be disgusting. I don’t think charging will help; nor do I think the company will clean the toilet any more often with a charge.

I was just taken back that Alsa was trying to charge me a €1. Next time, I will check how close other prices are. After knowing, if I still go with Alsa, and complain, then I would say I do fall into the whiner category.

If the toilets in the stations also charge, then I can see an additional reason for the fee - so that riders don't all choose to use the bus toilet instead of the stop options. I'm not sure about those speedy breaks. A loading stop is one thing but a driver break would (if I recall correctly) have to be at least 15 minutes.
