Almeria

We will be traveling in SE Spain in a few weeks. We are planning to spend some time in Cabo de Gata. We are wondering if it would be preferable to stay in one of the villages in the park ( like la Islets or las Negras) or in Almeria. We will have a car.

This is chalk and cheese question. What is your criteria to compare very modest size villages, pop. low hundreds with a city of near two hundred thousand?

Thanks for the reply Neil. Yep, didn't say that very well. So actually, my question would be, is Almeria an interesting town, worth spending some time in? Alternately, what are la Isleta and las Negras like? (besides being very small, for instance, are there good bars, restaurants?) Had no idea they were as small as you mention.

Almeria is a mostly modern looking city with one of the finest examples of an Arab fortress still existing in the world, a cathedral, a port both commercial and modest fishing and museums which might interest. A fine tapas crawl can be had in the older part of the city, I think it was vicinity of the cathedral.
The villages to my recollection and I would think in a couple of weeks will be quiet to ultra quiet but will still feed you.
All this and more you could get from a simple google or a guide book.
