Alhambra ticketing times -- morning/afternoon

Hi all! I have reviewed guidebooks and the website, but am still having a little bit of difficulty wrapping my head around Alhambra ticketing. (Note that all time slots are still readily available for the day I'm planning, so I still have all timing options available.)

What I understand that the ticket time (say, 11am) is your reserved timeslot to enter the Nasrid Palaces, and it seems like there is a half-hour window (so an 11am ticket allows for entry from 11-11:30am).

What I'm a little bit confused about, however, is that I'm reading about morning and afternoon tickets, and that if you get a morning ticket you need to complete your visit of the entire site before a certain time. For example, here:

If you make a reservation in the morning, you’ll automatically be assigned a morning ticket for the entire complex, and will have to complete your entire visit during the morning session (08:30 to 14:00 – some seasonal variation).

But then in my Rough Guide to Spain guidebook (p. 341 of the 16th edition):

If you're planning to spend the day at the Alhambra, book a slot for the Palacios Nazaríes between 11.30am and 1.30pm. This allows you entry to the Alcazaba and Generalife at any time afterwards. An earlier or later time slot limits your access to the Alcazaba and Generalife to before 2pm or after 2pm respectively.

Is this timing enforced by additional checkpoints within the Alhambra to enter the Alcazaba or Generalife, in addition to the Nasrid Palaces? And as a corollary, I assume the 2pm deadline is for entering past checkpoints (I can't imagine they will do a sweep of the property at 2pm exactly!) And finally, has anyone else heard/experienced about this 11:30am business?

Thank you all!

The morning/afternoon thing is no longer in effect; it was eliminated maybe 3 or 4 years ago.

Andrew , we visited in Autumn 2016 and encountered the same layout you describe . We took the earliest tickets available ( 8 AM or so ) At that time , being first into the palace , it wasn't crowded and much more enjoyable not being cheek by jowl with a crowd . ( the complex absolutely. gets packed ) Afterwards , the gardens were quite manageable but in spite of the formal limitations , there was no evidence of any enforcement of the time frames . We were there in early October , so depending on your dates you may encounter that . In any event , go early , it was worth the extra effort .

Other than once back in 1977, I don’t recall anybody checking tickets to enter the Alcazaba or Generalife gardens. From my experiences, one could theoretically wander around the entire complex, minus the Nasrid palace, without a ticket. I will add that we stayed at the no frills Hotel America right at the Alhambra during our 2014 visit there.

From the website, ensure you know your entrance time for entrance to the Nasrid palace, a visit to the complex will take about three hours, and backpacks sized 40x40cm or larger are prohibited. There are two location where one can store their backpack for free.

The time slot for the Nasrid palace is rigid. Do not be late. You can easily spend most of the day at the Alhambra. We had a full day ticket and it was checked at a couple of different points. It is a vast complex and you can see it quickly or slowly.

We were there three weeks ago and the time slot for the Palaces is a one half hour window, once you enter there is no time limit. The other areas are wide open. Tourism numbers are way down, it was just great. We spent two nights/ three days. We stayed at the hotel recommended by Rick, Hotel Guadalupe, we are glad we did. A short walk to the Alhambra
entrances and bus stop. Grananda is super easy to figure out. Enjoy!

My experience in November was the same as Frank’s.
