Airfare from US to Spain

Hello!

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for getting the best deals on airfare? We will be traveling in October from Texas. I have been checking all the airfare websites trying to catch any sales, but I'm not quite sure when prices usually drop. Thanks for the advice!

I think the best thing is to check Kayak periodically. I was doing that for the summer and finding average fares in June from Detroit to be around $1500. Then a few weeks ago, I went on again and found a fare on American for $870. I fly to Spain nearly every year and the only time I had paid that little was in 2009. I noticed that those fares stayed low for about a week, but from what I've seen, there is no particular trend. I would imagine that in October, you might be able to find tickets around $1000 or less. One thing that I did was to fly in and out on a Wednesday. The weekend flights were slightly higher, but still quite good. Good luck!

Unfortunately, there is no magic timing when airfares drop. You can set up fare alerts on the various websites that will alert you if a fare drops significantly, but that's about all you can do except keep checking around. Considering leaving from other airports, too. I live midway between Chicago, St Louis and Indianapolis, and I am also a pretty inexpensive ticket away from Atlanta. When I am looking for fares to Spain (I have been several times now), I consider all options. Last year, I flew Chicago to London, then took a budget airline to and from Madrid. I have also flown from here, via Atlanta, to Madrid. Flexibility on date and departure point are helpful, as is the ability to travel midweek.

Thank you so much!! I will just continue to do what I do, and I will use Kayak as well!

Not all airlines show up on kayak. Also try: aireuropa.com - budget airline but I think they fly from Texas. They are only o.k. If you can, purchase the business class seats which are better than coach.

skyscanner is another website that searches for airfares. You can set up an alert. October should be low season so hopefully the airfares will drop. Right now it is sky high!

I searched each airline for the flights that I wanted ( the best time, distance etc ) i narrowed it down to two. One on delta and one on usair. I kept checking Kayak but one of the combos they didn't list. I would check the airlines 3/4 times a day. One night I found Deltas flight down to 1080. Wow, that was the cheapest I had seen it. An hour later, back up to 1140. A week later the usair ways flight was down to 1060. I booked it. I still check everyday just in case, to see if I booked too soon. It has not been that low since. If you see a good price grab it. Good luck. Also, I was flying into Madrid and out of Barcelona.

I was searching for weeks on several sites for a round trip to Italy, and had the same frustrating fluctuations. I searched multiple sites, and flight combos, and recorded the results (I'm a bit compulsive at times...) In the course of a week, the price could change 4 or 5 times, and the price one day could be $400 more or less than the day before. Sometimes, it was a $1 difference. Really? What pricing model are they running that tells them to change the price of a $1200 ticket by one dollar? Often, it was cheaper to have a one or two day layover in another European city than it was for a single trip that stopped in that same city. From my several weeks of daily searching, it seemed Tuesdays were the cheapest, and Thursdays the most expensive. I bought 4 months in advance, and it dropped a bit more for couple of weeks, and is now slightly higher. I found my fare on a search site, but bought direct from the airline as you often get better protection and notice on flight switches, and don't have to use an intermediary if there's a problem.

I continuously run air fare searches on every available web site (airlines and the search engines). We have learned to include searches which take our arrival past the main destinations (e.g. Instead of arriving in madrid we will fly through it w the final destination being granada or malaga or seville) and the same with the return flights we have found better success w fares by not arriving departing from the same major airport. That said, we have no idea of what controls the cost of fares.
This year appears to be projected as another growth mark in tourism and I read the airlines are projecting full capacity on many of their flights so there is less incentive to lower faRes. Unfortunately Texas is really limited for competitive airport fares as DFW and Houston control a huge geographic market.
another tactic is to use virgin vacations to check their airfare hotel packages. We have found significant savings using their package for the airfare savings and then only using a couple of nights of the included hotels.

I am going to Spain next month and for me, flying from Vancouver, BC saved me $600 for our two tickets over flying out of Seattle. I watched prices for months on various websites and got them for $800 each about 6 months ago. This works for me because its only a 3 hour drive from my home north of Seattle.
