Any suggestions on the best carrier and best route from San Francisco to Barcelona? Looking for the most reliable and comfortable flights.

United/Lufthansa codeshare via Frankfurt is approx 14 hours and probably best bet all considered.

SFO-PARIS-BCN is a good route as well. Air France flies the A380, as does Lufthansa. That is, on certain routes. Whichever is less expensive.
However, an alternative approach might be...
If the traveller is not in a rush, flying SFO-Paris and taking the high speed train to Barcelona is an awesome way to see the countryside.

Try using the site routehappy.com for comparisons of the flights between SFO to BCN. They average the reviews and compare some of the amenities (or lack thereof) between airlines. Enter the date you want to go and they run a list. (Then go directly to the airline site to check out prices).
