Advice on car travel Cordoba to Almeria in Feb

As part of a bigger trip to Spain we were planning to rent a car in Cordoba and drive to Almeria over a week in February; Stopping at places like Montejaque for hiking, and Nerja for R&R. We have been to Malaga and Granada before so not likely to revisit. Any thoughts on driving conditions, weather in February and other interesting places to stop or things to consider. Many Thanks!

The actual drive is pretty straightforward and easy. The wildcard will be the weather.

If you depart Córdoba on the N-432 you’ll pass Fortaleza de la Mota just past the halfway point towards Granada. If you take the A-92 just north of Granada to go around it, the La Calahorra castle that probably won’t be open that time of year. If you’re a Clint Eastwood fan there’s a statue of him nearby in La Calhorra. Staying on the A-92 will take you through the Tabernas Desert, the only desert in Europe. Continuing on the same road you’ll pass Western Leone, a location that looks like a Wild West town and used in filming some of those of spaghetti westerns. From it, Almería is only 30 minutes away. The Alcazaba in Almería was nice to visit and the city has a nice central market.

If you took the A-45 south from Córdoba there are dolmens (burial chambers) in Antequera. Then, after turning onto the A-92 is Castillo fortaleza de Archidona. In that same general area is Castillo de Iznájar.

Any of the places I mentioned would make nice breaks from driving and most wouldn’t take really long to see.

If you decided to take the coastal route, I suspect many places will be closed because of the time of year.
