Advice for driving between Granada to Ronda to Sevilla

Planning a trip this spring. Will tour in Spain (mostly Andalucia) ahead of Rick Steves tour in Portugal. Trying to figure out the best way to get from Granada to Ronda and then eventually get to Sevilla.

My main questions are: 1) do folks feel comfortable renting a car and driving on that route, and 2) what are some of the best places to stop along the way?

Thank you so much for your input. Favorite hotels in Granada, Ronda and Sevilla would be appreciated. I have the Rick Steves guidebook, but would appreciate input if you have somewhat recent experiences with this.

In Granada we stayed at Hotel Anacapri (from the RS guidebook). In Sevilla, we stayed at El Rey Moro (might have been from RS guidebook) We liked both hotels.

We drove from Sevilla to Granada, no issues. We stopped at the white villages on the way. We visited Ronda on a day trip from Grazelema. We picked up our car at the Sevilla train station when we were finished in Sevilla and returned it to the Granada train station upon arrival to Granada. Driving was fairly easy though there were mountains and we wouldn't want to do it in the dark.

To rent a car or not rent a car, is a personal decision. Some people simply don’t feel comfortable driving in a foreign country. In Spain I always get a rental car.

Where to visit en route is also a personal choice and possible places will be dictated by the route you take. With the drive between Granada and Ronda fairly short, there will be time to visit a couple places. One place people occasionally mention is Antequera. There are a couple nature reserves and parks between the two places if you like outdoors activities. Once you know your route look at the town along it to see if anything’s is of interest to you,

Next May we’ll be staying at the Parador in Ronda. In 2011 we stayed at what is now Hotel Soho Boutique Palacio San Gabriel and enjoyed it but I have no recent information on it.

It's an easy highway drive for much of the way to Ronda. You may want to stop on the outskirts of Antequera to visit the prehistoric dolmens (check for opening times and days). I don't advise driving into Antequera, it's very challenging. I once spent a day visiting the "pink lagoon" (check on the flamingo population before committing) and hiking in El Torcal. Ronda has enough sights to fill a day and I've found it to be a very good place to base for up to 3 days while exploring the pueblos blancos. There are at least a couple different routes to Sevilla, with villages along the way and and convenient pullouts to admire the views and take photos.

We have driven a similar route in Spain, and had no trouble driving at all. Staying at the Parador in Ronda was a wonderful place to explore the town and enjoy the views from the swimming pool. One place that was an impromptu & memorable place to stop on the way was Cueva de la Pileta, only about 20km west of Ronda. Guided cave tour, which was a unique experience on the trip.
