We plan to do a day trip from Madrid to Toledo on Sept 27 or Sept 28 (Teus or Wed). Do we need to buy train tickets in advance? Will it be a problem if we don't pre buy for the return fare? I would like to be able to choose the time I return if possible without preplanning.

No need to buy in advance— pricing for that train isn’t dynamic, and there’s plenty of capacity. Buying online the night before might be easier than navigating the Renfe machines at Atocha.

The trip is 33 minutes. Trains run hourly and cost 11.10 Euros. No need to prebook.
