Accommodations in Granada

My Husband and I are looking to spend 1-2 nights in Granada in late October. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Loved the look of the Parador but its a little more than I wanted to spend. May or may not have a car since we'll be coming from Valencia and going to Malaga after Granada.

Hi Shelley,
I spent three nights in Granada a couple of years ago and I stayed at the Best Western Dauro II. It is an excellent facility with larger than average, well decorated rooms. They have an in-hotel bar and restaurant that also has seating outside. It is centrally located enough to walk to all of the main sights in Granada, except for the Alhambra. For this I walked over to the cathedral and rode the city bus. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Dauro II.

We are just back from Spain and we stayed at the Parador in Granada and absolutely loved it. The location just cannot be beat. We had a deluxe room overlooking the Generalife garden, with a little French-type balcony. It was so nice while touring the Alhambra and the garden to be able to pop into our room to shed a jacket or freshen up.

If you would qualify for their Golden Days promotion (check it out), there would be a huge savings on the room rate, as well as having a lovely buffet breakfast included.

When we originally booked our room last summer, the Golden Days promo was not in place for 2015, but I checked periodically, and the parador applied the discount upon request once the promo was in place for our timeframe.

I'd suggest sorting out whether you'll have the car or not before booking anywhere. The car will pose a whole host of logistical considerations you can avoid without one, and you'll have more options without. I'm definitely suggesting not to take a car, I did and wouldn't do anything differently the next time. But it was a challenge finding a place to stay reasonably closer to what we wanted to see and do that had parking and was going to be reasonably easy to drive to and from. Granada has restricted area in the city, and some narrow streets.

A challenge to get to, but also located in the Alhambra and more reasonably proceed than the Parador is the Hotel America. I had strongly considered it, and even booked a cancellable reservation there, but ultimately opted for the driving/logistical convenience over location and atmosphere. We ended up in the Hotel Alixares, very close to the Alhambra. But it is at the top of the same steep hill as the Alhambra, and the hotel itself is modern, generic, and lacking on the atmosphere and charm. It suited our needs and we were satisfied, but...meh.

Planning for a ca r definitely takes more effort, but I prefer having a car, and in a weird way I sort of enjoy the planning. I found the 'street view" on Google maps very useful for checking out the drive to and from hotels before booking.

You can park in the Alhambra lot and either walk down the hill through the Puertas Gambas gate or take the bus down to Plaza Nueva. It is an easy 500 meter walk down the hill, even with luggage. Then, for your visit to Alhambra or to depart Grenada, take bus #31 back up the hill to the lot.

Last time I used El Ladron de Agua. Wonderful! Right near plaza Nueva, walkable to everything including Alhambra, beautiful rooms, excellent service. I'd highly recommend it.

If not that hotel, certainly look in that area. Kind of on the border of the main town and the Albaycin. Also like Casa Morsica.

I've never stayed in the parador but have been in for meals. It's beautiful! Maybe a little stuffy but gorgeous. Wonderful location obviously but a bit far from anything else in town. If I come into $$$ I'd stay there next time but might end up missing the vibrancy of somewhere more in town.

Stayed at Hotel America for two nights. Was concerned at first regarding location away from downtown, but would stay there again. We enjoyed walking to/ from downtown and to Albyzin.

I liked Pension Zurita. Some may like a fancier hotel. I found it a charming little place, decent rooms, nice owners, sits on a square, at a bargain price. It's walking distance from everywhere (but Alhambra and Albaycin are uphill). We parked two or three blocks away in a garage and left it there during our visit (may have been Parking Victoria but seemed closer than that, maybe on Calle Paz?).
