Accommodation during next years total eclipse.

A group of eight of my friends had the idea of going to Spain next August to experience the total eclipse.
We’ve been looking for Villa, apartment or hotel accommodation for eight of us with no success at all.
Three times we have been refused by booking.com, once by Expedia and my one friend was charged $90 for a requested booking by vrbo that vrbo rejected , and now has to fight to get it back.
Some villas and holiday homes are asking insane prices, just because they can.

Anyway, the point of the story is that if you are thinking of going there at that time, get busy now to find somewhere to sleep!
I’m thinking we might abandon the whole idea altogether.
It’s either Spain to appreciate the eclipse , or somewhere in the ocean off the coast of Iceland. :o
Best of luck!

there was another recent thread on this subject: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/spain/how-far-out-to-schedule-for-eclipse-trip-in-2026

I was in the path of totality for the 2017 eclipse in North America and accommodations here were booked up a full two years ahead of time. Hotels definitely used surge pricing and there was a lot of traffic mayhem as people just parked along the main interstate to watch. I can totally see why people are eclipse chasers - it was a top 10 life moment for me. Anyway, best of luck I hope you can work something out.

Hi SJ, I'm sure that there is some crossover with Booking and other platforms, but have you tried the Casa Rurales? It is pretty easy to find a house that will fit 8. Besides the general webpage, the local regional association have their own site. In La Rioja it is ASCARIOJA For some places, you may not be able to book a year in advance.

Besides the extra eclipse demand, that is prime vacation time for many Spanish people. So as already noted you should get on it now. Also, as mentioned in the other post, while being on the coast is very nice, and Bilbao and Santander are worth visiting, they also increase the possibility of a cloudy or rain day for the 12th.

Northern Spain tends to be rainy and cloudy...so take it into account when planning to see the eclipse. I live near Bilbao and I do not think I'm going to watch it, due to weather conditions. But you never know!

Thanks for the tips.
I’m just reading a news clip today saying that Spain will have a heatwave this month of up to 47C.
Nope!

Oh my word......I know the forum folks who live in AZ can probably tolerate that but 116F is just awful. I'd vote for the ocean off the coast of Iceland, lol!!

Spain is not a homogeneous country in weather, landscapes, food, customs, looks, architecture...it varies a real lot from one place to another. I´m right now enjoying my vacation time in Cedeira, in the Ártabra coast, north of Galicia. Temperatures are during the day in the low 70s and everybody is wearing jackets in the evening and night, as right now it´s high 60s. Same in many other areas in northern Spain, which has very little in common with the south, center and eastern areas of this varied country. So a heat wave may be a reality in just some places (some parts of Andalucía, the center and center-west, or Mediterranean coasts, while others are enjoying much cooler days and even cold nights. If coming to the north, do not expect the typical idea of Spain...this is a different world :)

We are going to see the eclipse also -- party of 7, maybe 8. We just booked a villa in Valencia for a week for about $5100. Refundable until July. Air BnB. But I'll look on the Casas Rurales site as well.
Our friends who are leading the trip saw the previous total eclipse while in Mexico and had a hard time finding a place - but an even worse time flying back afterward because EVERYONE wanted to fly the same day (day after).
I think most of us will take an extra week and explore other nearby places while we're there.
Next up, finding cheap points flights!
